Game Mechanics Other Pages: Stats & Things |

Stats eh? This one aspect of Pokémon is probably what separates the good players from the bad. Those numbers under the categories; Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense and Speed is what, along with the level, how powerful your little 'mon is.

An attack's power relies on stats, not all of them, but certain ones. Attacks, as you might already know, can be be classified into two categories: Special and Physical.

Here is a handy list of all the attack types that are physical and all the attack types that are special. I'll explain why this is important later.

Physical

Special

  • Normal
  • Fighting
  • Bug
  • Flying
  • Ground
  • Rock
  • Ghost
  • Poison
  • Steel
  • Fire
  • Water
  • Electric
  • Grass
  • Ice
  • Psychic
  • Dragon
  • Dark

Anyway, if your attack is say, a fire type attack, such as flamethrower, you only need to worry about your Pokémon's special attack. If this is really high, you will a lot more damage than if it was low. For example, if your special attack was at 200, then that would do more damage than if it were 20. This would mean, if your Pokémon had a 2 attack, but 200 special attack, your flamethrower wouldn't have anything to worry about.

Pokédude is one of the many people who believe stats are very important.

Similarly, if your Pokémon had a Physical attack like rock throw, then it'd still do loads of damage if its attack is 150 while special attack is only 35.

Like attack, when your Pokémon is having gallons of water thrown at it in a Hydro Pump, its a good idea for your Pokémon to have a high special defense in order to protect itself. If not, you might find yourself having an early shower (yes, that dreadful pun was intended). Again, like with the specials, it works for defense as well.

Speed? Now that's not a kettle of fish in the literal sense. This stat is the decider on who attacks first. In a niche way, speed is quite controversial. There's not much to say that hasn't already be mentioned. Lets move on...

Some of the more literate people reading this may have once in their lives noticed messages in battle like, "Its accuracy was lowered". Now your wondering why its not listed on the stats screen, which displays the other 5. Like evasion, accuracy is known as a hidden stat. You cannot see it. Is is there to baffle and confuse? Or is there to make the game more varied and interesting?

Both of these stats are to do with whether your attack will hit or miss. We've all been there. Both Pokémon on one health, you triumphantly choose thunder as you prepare your victory speech, but then to everyone's horror (well, your opponents joy), "Electabuzz's attack missed". Blame these stats. Evasion is whether you or your opponent (depending on the situation)'s attack will be dodged, and accuracy is whether you or your opponents attacks hit.

Interestingly, if you decreased your opponents evasion, in order to make your attack more likely to hit, but then your opponent decreases your accuracy, the two attacks have effectively cancelled each other out. Amazing.

HP (your hit points), is not a stat in the usual sense- it is calculated using lots of different things. One more thing, always remember that any stats altered during battle are always "reset" after the battle. In other words, if an attack decreases your attack power, by the time the battles over your attack will be back to its old self again.

Some Pokémon have outstanding stats for one of two specific things. Chansey and Wobbuffet have extremely high HP, which Mewtwo and Alakazam have a very high special attack stat (great for Psychic). As a general rule, most legendary Pokémon have above average stats in all areas, with the notable exception of Mew and Celebii.
