This episode is essential viewing because:
Ash switches his Snorlax for one of his Tauros.

Ash begins his battle against Drake in the Orange League.

Ash, Misty, and Tracey, are heading towards a Pummello island aboard Lapras, when Ash is suddenly knocked off Lapras' back. They all see a Dragonite doing tricks in the distance. When they arrive at the island, and Ash plans to defeat the leader of the Orange Crew to get in the Orange Island Hall of Fame. He goes to register, and the man at the desk says no one has beaten the Crew leader, Drake, and his Dragonite.

The man tells Ash about the Hall of Fame, showing everyone who's beaten previous Crew leaders to win the trophy. He also informs Ash it will be a six on six battle. The gang head to the Pokemon Center to prepare his Pokemon. His first five are ready but Snorlax, who fell asleep a day ago, and won't wake up. Ash calls Professor Oak, and Ash trades in Snorlax for Tauros (several of which he caught in the banned ep, Legend of Dratini).

Meanwhile, Team Rocket confronts Drake and attempts to steal his Dragonite. They are about to use Arbok and Weezing, Drake's Dragonite sends them blasting off with a Hyper Beam. The next morning they hear an advertising lorry promote the match. Team Rocket decide they can steal Dragonite once the challenger softens it up. The day of the competition arrives, and Ash is ready to fight Drake. The rules are explained, and the field becomes rock with a pool of water in the center.

The defending champ, Drake, can't change his Pokemon once he's chosen them, or he'll lose the round, but Ash can swap whenever he wants. First up, is Pikachu against Drake's Ditto. Ditto Transforms into Pikachu. Both use Thunder, which doesn't work. Thundershock doesn't work either. The rocks start to crumble and Ditto is moving fast enough but Pikachu takes a fall. However, it gets up. Pikachu and Ditto Pikachu use Quick Attack on each other, each tiring the other out. Pikachu gets in with a Thunderbolt, ending the round.

Next up for Drake is Onix. Ash decides to give Pikachu a rest and sends out Squirtle. Squirtle tries a Water Gun, but Onix digs underground. Ash orders Squirtle to dive into the water and hide. But before it can get there, Onix sends Squirtle flying when it surfaces. It lands on Onix's back, and starts running down towards the water. Onix catches it in a Bind attack. Ash tells Squirtle to use Water Gun, but he can't. Squirtle makes a comeback with Withdraw, then Hydro Pump, then a Skull Bash! Onix is defeated.

The crowd is stunned that Drake has lost two in a row. Drake sends out a Gengar. Ash recalls Squirtle for Tauros. Tauros uses Fissure, but Gengar jumps out of the way, and uses Confuse Ray. Confused, Tauros starts ramming itself into rocks, so Ash recalls it for Lapras (only the second time he used it in battle, I think). Gengar tries Hypnosis, but Lapras dives under water to avoid it. Lapras pops up and hits Gengar with a Water Gun. Gengar jumps in the air, and Drake commands it to use Night Shade. Ash commands Lapras to use Ice Beam. The beams collide, and there big explosion. What will be see when the smoke clears. This time it really is TO BE CONTINUED >

Hello, Pumello! Trivia:

Drake's Gengar levitates over Tauros's Fissure attack - a concept that was introduced into the games two generations later.
Ash's Pikachu (and Drake's Ditto) use five different attacks in their battle.
The narrator refers to Gengar's Confuse Ray as "Confusion Ray".
