Ash tries to open the pod, but Jessie reveals that Wobbuffet has the key. Team Rocket offer an alliance, but Ash and the gang run away. The race is on to get to Wobbuffet first.

In the river, Wobbuffet swims into a Quagsire. Quagsire points towards the shore, and Wobbuffet follows that direction. Team Rocket spots it and follows, with Ash and the gang following behind them.

They find Wobbuffet swinging through the trees. As they run, Ash falls down a cliffside, followed by Team Rocket. They see Wobbuffet hanging from the cliff. It falls, landing on a passing lorry. Following the lorry are a few police cars. Team Rocket run away, and Officer Jenny explains to Ash that they need to catch the truck. The gang offer to come too.

Officer Jenny explains that the lorry driver is the master thief Gonith. Brock recalls that Gonith breaks into bank vaults with his Golem. The police have blocked the road at the bridge.

In the lorry, Gonith laughs at the police, knowing that they're being led astray. Suddenly, Wobbuffet appears through the windscreen. Gonith tries to move Wobbuffet with the wipers, and spots that he's headed straight for the police cars. The lorry crashes into them, and keeps going. Officer Jenny orders the police to block all exits from the area. The lorry comes to a standstill, and Team Rocket lands their balloon nearby.

Gonith releases a balloon of his own, escaping from the lorry. He spots Wobbuffet in the basket next to him. Gonith attacks Wobbuffet, only to be thrown out of the basket by a Counter attack. The police dive on him, but Wobbuffet is trapped in the balloon.

Team Rocket chase in their own balloon. Jessie attempts to recall Wobbuffet, but the balloon is torn against a building. Meowth climbs the balloon to seal the tear, but Wobbuffet jumps onto it, causing Team Rocket and Wobbuffet to blast off in opposite directions.

On the ground, Ash tries to free Pikachu with a hammer. They spot Wobbuffet flying through the air, and Ash orders Chickorita to grab it with a Vine Whip. Chickorita's vines are too long, however, and Wobbuffet lands in a nearby speedboat, causing the driver to fall into the water.

As Team Rocket pine after Wobbuffet, they spot the speedboat. Jessie jumps into the boat at the same time as Ash. They spot that Wobbuffet's broken the steering wheel.

Meanwhile, Gonith has escaped again, and is riding a motorcycle through the area. The speedboat crashes into another boat, causing Wobbuffet to fly through the air and land on the motorcycle. With the speedboat headed for a bridge, Totodile manages to use its Water Gun to slow them down.

They track Gonith down to a run-down building. The police are outside, and Officer Jenny explains that he'll let Wobbuffet go free in exchange for a helicopter to help him escape. Ash and the gang run behind the building, spotting a hole. Team Rocket have tunnelled their way inside. They offer to let Gonith use their tunnel in return for Wobbuffet. Gonith refuses, using his Golem to attack them. Ash arrives through the tunnel, and orders Totodile to use its Water Gun. Golem uses Double Team, and a Dynamic Punch. Golem attempts to finish Totodile with a Tackle, but Totodile hides behind Wobbuffet, who Counters the attack. Golem crashes through the wall, and the police manage to grab Gonith.

Team Rocket escape in a new balloon with Wobbuffet, and Ash sends Noctowl after them. Noctowl pecks a hole in the balloon, and the key falls from Wobbuffet into Ash's hand. He frees Pikachu, who thunderbolts Team Rocket away.

Officer Jenny thanks Ash for his help in capturing Gonith, and the gang proceed with their journey.
