The group continue on their way towards Olivine City. The pass through a small village, and witness a battle between a Nidoking and a Feraligatr. Next, the Feraligatr battles a Heracross. Brock surmises that the trainer must be using different kinds of Pokémon to train Feraligatr. Next, Feraligatr takes down a Granbull.

The trainer is named Raiden, and hopes that Feraligatr will win him a King's Rock. He explains that in this village, everyone trains their Pokémon to sumo wrestle. He introduces Shonosuke, the executive director of the Pokémon sumo society. Misty suggest that they move on, but Raiden encourages them to stay and watch them train.

Ash releases Totodile to take a look at what it'll eventually become. Shonosuke explains that the sumo conference is coming up, where Pokémon fight using their physical strength only, rather than any attacks. Ash wants to enter with Pikachu and Totodile, but Raiden explains that the Pokémon must be heavy to compete.

Ash asks Professor Oak to send him Snorlax. In return, Ash sends Oak his Noctowl so the professor can examine the unusual colouring.

Later, Nurse Joy weighs Pokémon to ensure that they're heavy enough to compete. Team Rocket have disguised Wobbuffet as a Miltank; Jessie wants to win something for once, but James wonders how Wobbuffet could possibly win the tournament. Snorlax breaks the weighing scale, and as such is approved.

As the tournament begins, Raiden says that a Blastoise is the strongest rival. Meanwhile, the first battle has begun between Ursaring and Wobbuffet disguised as Miltank. Wobbuffet Counters Ursaring's attack, winning the match easily. Shonosuke uses his position as executive director to question the referee's decision, disqualifying the Miltank for using an attack. Team Rocket throw off their disguises, attempting instead to steal the competing Pokémon. Raiden has Feraligatr use its Hydro Pump, sending them away.

Feraligatr battles a Golem. Despite the Golem's weight advantage, Feraligatr secures a win. Snorlax faces a Poliwrath. Snorlax hardly does a thing, but still wins the match.

Outside, James finds a stall selling Pokémon paw-prints. Jessie decides to forge paw-prints to sell to the Pokémon trainers - to make money, and to provide a distraction while they steal their Pokémon.

In the semi-finals, Feraligatr faces Blastoise. It's an intense battle, but Feraligatr finally manages to push Blastoise out of the ring. Meanwhile, Snorlax once again wins with ease - this time against a Machamp. Raiden tells Ash that he won't hold back in the final, and Shonosuke congratulates Ash on being the first rookie to make it to the end.

The final begins, between Feraligatr and Snorlax. Feraligatr attacks aggressively, but Ash manages to use Snorlax's size to his advantage, finally pushing Feraligatr out of the ring.

Having won the tournament, Ash is awarded the King's Rock - as well as a year's supply of Pokémon food, which Snorlax devours immediately. Recalling him, Ash decides to send him back for his Noctowl. Finally, Raiden congratulates Ash, wishing him luck in the future.

Finally, Team Rocket arrive with their forged paw-prints far too late, and everyone has left.
