This episode is essential viewing because:
Jessie, James, and Meowth lose the Dragonite. Charizard returns.

A strange Pokemon is flying towards our heroes. It is a Charizard. He uses Flamethrower on Ash, and this is how he tells he is his. He flies down, licking him happily as another Charizard, this one wearing a bow, flies down with a girl on its back.

The girl is Lisa, from Pokemon 3 the Movie. She had been training Ash’s Charizard and her own Charizard, Charla, in the Charisific Valley.

Both Ash and Claire recognize her. Ash is glad he met her and Brock starts hitting on her but Misty puts her hand over his mouth and pulls him away.

Lisa asks Ash if he has battled Claire yet. Ash replies that he did but they had to stop because Team Rocket was stealing the Dragon Fang and they had somehow convinced Dragonite to keep the fang for them. Why, they do not know. Dragonite is very intelligent.

Meanwhile, Team Rocket is in the tight grip of Dragonite. It is flying very quickly, making Jessie, James, and Meowth sick. But Dragonite tells them to hang on to their lunch, they’re going somewhere nice, as Meowth translates.

As they fly on the hot air balloons that are being kept in the air by the two Charizards, our heroes comment on the mysterious beauty of the Dragon’s Den. The little old man says that most people think dragons are destructive, but it was them who made this forest beautiful. Again they wonder why Dragonite would team up with those Team Rocket crooks. Dragonite’s owner, Blackthorn’s first gym leader, had loved the Dragon’s Den more than anything else. Dragonite had too. So when Dragonite’s owner passed away, Dragonite stayed to take care of the Dragon’s Den, and to this day has done so.

While the heroes are on their, Team Rocket is lying on the grass, sick, the sky spinning above them. Then Dragonite comes with some apples and the team eats up. Dragonite tells them to feed themselves then rest. They cry because Dragonite is treating them so wonderfully.

Then they see a building that is down by the lake. They have a plan to go on steal what’s inside now, because whatever’s in it must be valuable.

Now, again we see the Ash crew and the others in the balloons. Someone asks what the bright light is and Claire responds that it’s the light shining off of the lake. Then the little old man says that the Dragon Shrine is there and that if Team Rocket found that…well, he can’t bear to think of it.

Ash asks what the Dragon Shrine is and he replies that the Dragon Shrine was made when people feared Pokemon, but now the two make peace so the people just leave it there. Inside the shrine is a bowl that holds the Prayer Flame which has never gone out. While he’s telling about this we see Team Rocket sneaking past Dragonite, making their way into the Dragon Shrine. We see them opening the doors, staring in awe at the golden bowl, where the Prayer Flame is still burning. Jessie says maybe they should put out the fire; James disagrees because he thinks it would be more valuable still burning. But wouldn’t James get burned? James doesn’t really care, he looks prepared for anything. Then he grabs the bowl, he’s got it, but the fire goes up his gloves, it burns badly so he drops the bowl into the grass. The wild Pokemon look at the bowl, then flames spread among the grass. Jessie is disgusted with James, they run out of the shrine, are blocked by a wall of flame, then they hear a roar. They turn around and, there’s Dragonite, snarling angrily! Dragonite uses a Gust on Team Rocket, then it Hyper Beams them. Dragonite is making another Hyper Beam in its mouth, while Team Rocket cowers below. Jessie shoves James in front of here, telling Dragonite to Hyper Beam him, since it was all his idea.

Meanwhile, the good guys are in their hot-air balloons, and they see smoke. And where there’s smoke, there’s fire. Both Ash and Lisa tell their Charizards to speed up.

Elsewhere, Team Rocket is running away. Dragonite catches up with them and sends out another Hyper Beam. Jessie, desperate, shoves Wobbuffet in front of her and when the attack hits Wobbuffet it bounces back to Dragonite. Team Rocket may think they have taken care of Dragonite, but then it flies back up, more enraged. Dragonite aims another Hyper Beam at Team Rocket, he fires it, and Charizard blocks it with his Flamethrower. Team Rocket is thankful for what the Ash crew has done, but there is no time. Claire sends out Dragonair and tells it to put out the fire. Dragonair changes the weather to rain.

Lisa, Charla, Brock, and Misty go to save the Pokemon of the forest. Brock uses his Onix and Geodude to put out the fire using rocks. Misty sends out Staryu and Politoed, telling them to use Water Gun. At least Staryu uses it; Politoed just stands there clapping. Misty tells Politoed to do a Water Gun too.

Who’s that Pokemon?
It’s Chinchou!

Dragonite is very angry. Team Rocket is sitting with them, saying thanks, then the old man takes James’ bag away from him. James wants back what is his, but the man says he’ll give him what is his if he doesn’t shut up.

Then Dragonite fires another Hyper Beam at them, but Charizard blocks it with a Flamethrower. Claire says that Dragonite is suffering from attack rage, which is what happens when a dragon Pokemon uses too many attacks at once. It’s confused and starts attacking furiously; it can’t stop.

Ash tells Pikachu to give it a Thunder, but Dragonite gives Pikachu a slam of its tail and sends it flying. Then Charizard comes in but he’s slammed with the tail too. Charizard and Dragonite glare at each other. Team Rocket tells about what they did, that James took the Prayer Flame then he dropped it. Misty tells Politoed to use Water Gun to put out the fire that’s in the shrine.

Meanwhile, Charizard uses Flamethrower on Dragonite, who falls down into the water. Then Dragonite comes back out of the water, uses a Hyper Beam, but Dragonair blocks it using Safeguard. Ash and Claire will battle together, for now. Then Dragonair wraps Dragonite but it easily breaks free. Then Dragonair sends out a Hyper Beam. Dragonair does another Hyper Beam but Dragonite dodges it.

Then Claire gets an idea. But she needs Pikachu. Ash and Pikachu agree and are ready to go. Dragonair then creates thunderclouds and they need to keep Dragonite still so Charizard uses Flamethrower. Charla and the others get out of the way.

Then Dragonair uses Thunder. It hits Dragonite. Then Pikachu uses Thunder. Dragonite uses Hyper Beam and Charizard counters with Fire Spin. The Hyper Beam is trapped in the Fire Spin. Dragonite fires another Hyper Beam then it makes an explosion and Dragonite falls into the water.

Dragonite flies out of the water and Ash is about to tell Pikachu to uses Thunder when Claire tells Ash to look at its face. It has a confused expression. It takes ashes from the ground, looks at them, then starts crying. The other Pokemon comfort it.

Then the old man looks at the case which held the Dragon Fang. It’s empty. Team Rocket is running away and they have it. So Ash tells Pikachu to uses Thunderbolt on them. They blast off and Ash catches the fang.

Now the bowl is put back into the shrine and it is still burning. The old man makes a pun then the others leave.

Claire thanks Ash and says that they’ll have the battle first thing tomorrow and that they need to relax. Then Charizard gives Ash a good luck kiss: a Flamethrower. Ash falls and we see something that looks like, Wobbuffet’s hand?
