This episode is essential viewing because:
Professor Birch parts with the group. May's Silcoon evolves into Beautifly and Jessie's Cascoon evolves into Dustox.

Ash and co rest on the beach along with prof. Birch. They have just finished eating and prof. Birch compliments Brock on his cooking skills. Brock is flattered and Max and May exclaim that he cooks meals like this for them all the time. Ash then interrupts, asking the professor if he would like to see some of the Pokemon he has captured since the last time they saw him. Birch accepts and Ash releases them all. Birch is impressed by them and May also shows her pokemon. He tells May it will become a great Beautifly and May becomes excited by this as Brock shows prof. Birch his Lotad and Mudkip. Prof. Birch examines Lotad, wondering why it's just standing there. Brock nervously laughs, saying Lotad isn't the smartest.

In the meanwhile, Jessie happily scrubs her Cascoon, exclaiming that she can't wait for her "Silcoon" to evolve into a Beautifly. James and Meowth sigh and try to explain to her that she doens't have a Silcoon and he pulls out a Cascoon and Silcoon card and explains it to her how it works. Jessie looks at it and then exclaims that hers is special.

Ash and co approach a forest where Professor Birch says he would like to study some Pokemon here. Max becomes excited and rushes in to find some, but he stops below a branch when a Seedot falls onto his head. It then lands on the ground and stares up at him. Ash and co catch up with Max as two more Seedots fall down. Prof Birch tells everyone that these are Seedot as Ash scans the pokemon with his pokdex. May and Max examine the pokemon and Max offers some food but instead they just stare at him. Ash tries to put one back on the branch, but it just falls off again. May wonders why the Pokemon are acting so strangely and Birch notices some fallen trees. He says that the Pokemon must think they are here to wreck the trees. Birch tells him that if they show the Pokemon that they are friendly, they'll understand they aren't the one causing the problems to the tree. He tells Max to rub one with a leaf, and so Max does and it causes that the Seedot started to jump up happily. The Professor smiles, knowing the Pokemon are convinced now. The three Seedots then falls down and begin to roll back and forth. Birch falls down and does the same. May wonders what he is doing and Brock suggests that the Seedots feel more comfortable when they interact with them in the same way.

In the meantime on a cliff, Team Rocket watches upon them. Meowth says that the Seedot would be a great present for the boss as he gets a new vision of how Giovanni will use the Seedot in the morning to do some excercise. They are all happy with that vision and plan to steal the Seedot.

As the Professor continues to roll, suddenly a smokescreen covers their view. As the smoke clears, Team Rocket came in the picture. Team Rocket demands to have the Seedot but they refuse of course. Jessie sends out Seviper and Ash calls out Corpish which uses a vice grip on Seviper. Jessie becomes furious and releases Cascoon. Prof. Birch recognizes it as a Cascoon but Jessie yells at him that it's not a Cascoon but a Silcoon as she starts to argue with the professor. May then releases her Silcoon and Birch comments to Jessie that you can tell by the eyes that the two are different. Jessie still refuses to believe him and lets Cascoon attack. Both Silcoon and Cascoon smash into each other and as soon as they hit, Silcoon starts to glow and evolves into Beautifly. The glowing stops and May lays eyes on her brand new Beautifly! Cascoon uses string shot on Beautifly but Corphish blocks the attack. Corphish then uses crabhammer on Cascoon, sending it flying back to the rockets and then all of them are blasted off into the forest. Max comments that the Seedots seem happy, and Beautifly then lands on May's head. Birch comments that she should do quite well in Pokemon Contests with such a beautiful Pokemon and Ash agrees. Brock hands May some Pokemon food and says it is Beautifly's favorite. May thanks him and starts to feed her new Pokemon. Max then comments that he would like to see some attacks, so May has Beautifly use whirlwind. Birch then searches through his backpack and takes out a frisbee an dhands it to May. He tells her that it's a good practise to let Beautifly hold up a frisbee with the whirlwind. May throws it in the air, but Beautifly can't keep it in the air and the second time it does manage to do so. The Seedot become happy too and Birch comments that they probably want to play too.

Down a cliff, Team Rocket is hanging on a cliff. Jessie comments that if her "Silcoon" evolves into Beautifly, they can catch all those Seedots and Ash and co's pokemon. James and Meowth sigh as they imagine how Jessie will reaction when she realises her Cascoon won't evolve into a Beautifly. She would become furious and would hit them on the head many times! Jessie then interrupts them with her loud mouth, exclaiming that they are going to make her "Silcoon" evolve. Meowth asks how and she grabs him. In the forest, Birch tries to put the Seedots back onto their branch, but they fall again. He exclaims that Seedots are easy prey on the ground, and he doesn't understand why they won't stay in the trees.

Meowth now started to fight Cascoon as he lunges at it, but Jessie has it tackle him. James declares Cascoon the winner, but Jessie says it isn't Beautifly yet. Jessie then pitches her Cascoon against James's Cacnea. After two tackles, Cascoon is the winner of the match. Meowth says it won, but he calls it Cascoon, which angers Jessie. James then comments that Cascoon may not want to evolve, which angers Jessie too. James realizes that he called it Cascoon and corrects himself. Jessie then tells them that they are not going to stop until her "Silcoon" is a Beautifly.

Also Ash and co finally find a branch where the Seedots hang onto, but their success is interrupted when Team Rocket floats down in their balloon. Jessie sends in her Cascoon, knowing a battle against the twerps will give it a lot of experience. May has Beautifly use whirlwind, blowing it back. Jessie tells it to get back up and attack, and it does so. James releases Cacnea to help, but it just hugs him instead. Ash decides to release Treecko, and Cacnea uses pin missile which Treecko dodges. Jessie lets Cascoon tackle Beautifly and it hits, but Beautifly blows it back again with its whirlwind. Jessie tells it to try again, but it's blown away again. This time Cascoon starts to glow, which shocks everybody and it evolves. Jessie is happy she's getting her Beautifly but as soon as Cascoon finishes it's evolution, James throws a blanket over it and Meowth rushes in dressed like a Beautifly. Jessie gets mad and picks him up, asking what he's doing. Meowth exclaims that Beautifly isn't ready yet, but she throws him away and walks over to James. She tells him to move and when he refuses, she throws him out of her way. She then removes the blanket to find a Dustox. Jessie stares at it not knowing what it is as Ash scans it with his pokedex.

Jessie then starts to cry, which freaks out James and Meowth. After a few seconds of almost exploding, Jessie screams out that she loves it! James and Meowth are shocked as Jessie goes on about how strong and cooler it is than a Beautifly. She praises it for several minutes, confusing everybody and sends it out into a battle. She asks James what attacks it has and he tells her that it knows poison sting and tackle. Jessie has it tackle Beautifly and is impressed by it's power. May becomes mad, saying that Beautifly is better as it's more beautiful and Dustox can't win contests. Jessie sighs, saying who needs contests when she has this much power. May becomes even more angrier and lets Beautifly tackle Dustox. Dustox then uses poison sting, but Beautifly uses whirlwind to sends it to James and Meowth, who dodge it. Cacnea then uses pin missile and Dustox releases a psybeam, but Ash has Treecko take the hits. He then recalls it and releases Corphish. Cacnea tries another attack, but Corphish takes the hit. Brock calls out Mudkip who waterguns Cacnea back to James. Beautifly then tackles Dustox back to Jessie and Corphish sends them blasting off with a crabhammer and a bubble attack.

Now that team Rocket is gone, prof. Birch checks out the ground and tells everybody that this is a good area for Seedot. They look up to see them happily swaying on the branch. Later that night, Ash and co wave goodbye to Birch. He wishes May a lot of luck in her contests and Ash for his badges and he sets off leaving May behind with her brand new Beautifly.
