This episode is essential viewing because:
May passes the first round of the Pacifidlog Contest.

On the beach of Pacifidlog Town, Ash and co watch May train with her pokemon. As she lets Bulbasaur perform petal dance, Beautifly silver wind and Combusken a flamethrower attack, Ash and co comment on how well May and her pokemon perform. When May wants to tell Skitty what to do, she notices Skitty is gone. Skitty is looking at a trainer and his Aipom who wiggles his tail in the air and Skitty does the same. May then quickly picks Skitty up and tells it not to run away like that again and that it should train for the contest. With that May looks around and sees many coordinators preparing for the contest.

Ash comments that the competition is though and Brock comments that it’s even tougher at the Grand Festival. Max asks his sister if she’s nervous but she calmly replies saying she isn’t and her pokemon agree. Ash decides it’s also a good time to train his Snorunt’s ice beam so he throws out Snorunt’s pokeball. Ash tells it to perform an ice beam and a small ball appears in front of Snorunt but suddenly shrinks. Ash wonders what’s wrong as Snorunt turns around and looks at Ash as the ice beam gets fired and hits Ash. Ash’s head is completely frozen as he shakes his head to get the ice of his head and continues to train.

In the meanwhile, Team Rocket spies on Ash and co. They plan to steal Pikachu as Ash is busy training Snorunt. So with their fake bushes they close in on Pikachu and jump up in order to catch Pikachu but Snorunt releases an ice beam which hits Team Rocket and sets them back behind the fake bushes. Snorunt becomes excited and starts to fire multiple ice beams and many coordinators start to run. Ash tells it to stop and the ice beam nearly hits the Aipom from before and it starts to run. It’s trainer calls for it as May and Skitty see the Aipom rushing by. Skitty once again looks at Aipom’s tail and follows the Aipom. Together with Aipom’s trainer, May follows her pokemon. Both pokemon jump out of the bushes and when crossing a bridge, Aipom goes left and is followed by it’s trainer as Skitty goes right and is followed by may.

In the meanwhile, Snorunt is still happily firing its ice beam so Ash jumps on top of it and it stops firing ice beams. Snorunt still laughs as Ash sighs. Max and Brock come running too and are happy it’s over. They then notice that Skitty and Haruka are both not with May’s other pokemon.

In the meantime, May is searching for Skitty near the shore as she suddenly hears Skitty’s voice. She immediately goes to check it out and finds Skitty along with Aipom’s trainer. Skitty jumps in May’s arms and the boy tells May it’s very vivid. The boy then introduces himself as Toshki, a pokemon coordinator. May tells him she’s a coordinator too.

Then a girl walks up a stairway that is leading to the beach while holding a pokeball. She notices May and Toshki and becomes suspicious. In the meantime, May and Toshki talk about the upcoming contest and about Skitty when they suddenly get interrupted by the girl who wants to know what’s going on. Toshki calls her Eriko and explains to her that they were just talking. Eriko glares at May and comments she’s no thread. Toshki introduces May and Eriko tells her she should train for the contest as May explains on how Skitty was lost. But Eriko isn’t interested as she starts to daydream about how she and Toshki will win the contest together while both holding one half of the ribbon. May comments that will never happen and Eriko starts to talk about the contest. Toshki tells Eriko that May will also enter with her Skitty but Eriko says she has no chance which such a pokemon which angers May. May tells Skitty to get ready for a battle but Eriko says it’s no use since her pokemon is better and she tosses a pokeball in the air which releases a Jynx. May decides to scan it with her pokedex as Eriko hugs her Jynx tightly. Ash and co then appear and ask if she’s okay. She says she is and she introduces her friends to Toshki, who introduces Eriko.

Ash tells Pikachu to use thunderbolt but it has no effect and Snorunt can’t charge up for an ice beam attack. Then May comes and tells Beautifly to tackle the balloon and the two cages fall out of their hands. Ash catches one and Brock catches the other. Team Rocket is mad and wants them back. May tells Combusken to use sky uppercut and it hits the balloon which lands on the beach. In the meantime Brock and Ash try to break the cages with a rock.

Team Rocket demands a battle and May gladly accepts since it would be a good battle. Team Rocket sends out Seviper and Cacnea, who happily hugs James. Jesse tells Seviper to use Haze and it blocks May’s vision which worries Toshki. Jesse tells Seviper to use bite and James tells Cacnea to use needle arm. They charge for May as she is still blinded by the smoke. Toshki then comes to the rescue and sends out his Houndoom which uses swift which hits Cacnea and Seviper. The smoke disappears and Toshki runs up to May and asks her if he can help which angers Eriko. But Team Rocket isn’t done yet and they tell Cacnea and Seviper to do poison tail and pin missile but Toshki tells Houndoom to use flamethrower which fires both pokemon. Bulbasaur then uses his petal dance which also hits both pokemon badly.

Toshki and May compliment each other’s pokemon which angers Eriko once more. Team Rocket decides to go for another bite and needle arm combination but May tells Skitty to use assist which turns out to be a fire spin. Max is happy to see Skitty performing fire spin. Toshki then tells Houndoom to use shadow ball which goes through the fire spin and hits Seviper and Cacnea. This shocks Team Rocket and angers Meowth and Eriko too that May and Toshki fight together so well. Ash and Brock finally managed to break the cages and Snorunt and Pikachu are free. May gets ready to finish off with Team Rocket but Eriko pushes her away and Jynx pushes Skitty away and Jynx releases a hyperbeam which blasts Team Rocket off once again!

May gets angry at Eriko for pushing her away like that but Eriko comments that nobody makes a better team then her and Toshki. He tries to calm Eriko down and tells her to finish this in the contest and Eriko says she will and May agrees.

As May and co stand in line to register for the contest, Team Rocket is also planning on entering the contest. Jessie wants Meowth to be in the contest but he doesn’t like the plan until a woman passes by who keeps complimenting her Persian and who also smiles at Meowth as it passes by. Meowth is reminded about the boss’ Persian and becomes enraged and wants to enter the contest now.

As the contest begins, Ash is outside with his Pikachu and Snorunt and comments that this way they can train the icebeam and look at May’s contest on the videoscreen. Then the announcer introduces the judges and the first coordinator who turns out to be Jessie and Meowth. With a lot of smoke and coming out of the air, they appear on stage, Jessie of course in disguise. As Jessie introduces herself, James pushes a button and a block of ice appears on the field. Meowth immediately starts to make a sculpture and when it’s finished it appears to be his boss and Persian. Max is impressed as Brock wonders where he has seen that face before. Meowth then turns the Persian into a Meowth and the crowd goes wild as Meowth and Jessie wave at the audience.

In the coordinators lobby, May and Eriko sit next to each other and as they look at each other, they immediately turn their faces away as Toshki nervously laughs. In the meanwhile, Snorunt’s practising does seem to work as it does perform an ice beam but it’s aiming needs some improvement. Ash then notices Toshki and his Houndoom on the screen. Toshki tells Houndoom to perform a shadowball and a swift attack and so it does. The shadowball floats in the air as the stars twirl around it and the announcer is very enthusiastic. In the lobby May is excited about Toshki’s performence.

Eriko is next and tells her Jynx to use blizzard and psychic. And so Jynx does and she creates an ice tornado which impresses Max and Brock. May is next and tells Skitty to do an assist attack and Skitty releases a razor leaf attack as Max wonders what May will do now. May tells Skitty to do a blizzard attack which freezes all the leaves and breaks them with a double slap attack, causing ice sparkles to float in the air and the crowd goes wild. Toshki also claps for May but stops when Eriko glares at him.

Ash then walks into the lobby and rushes to May and co who wait on a bench. Ash congratulates May on a great performance and Toshki and Eriko also approach. Eriko admits she’s done well but not good enough to continue in the contest which angers May who says that they will see as Toshki tries to break them up.

The announcer then appears on the screen and tells them she’ll tell who goes to the next round. They all run up to the screen. First one that goes to the next round is Toshki who is cheered by May and Eriko. The others are Jessie and Erika as May and co anxiously anticipate the last coordinator which will appear on the screen. May becomes more nervous and finally her photo appears on the screen and they all cheer. Then the photo’s start to hussle and they are mixed now and it appears that Eriko will battle Jessie and May has to battle Toshki which shocks May. Eriko then angers May even more if she wonders if she can beat Toshki, she says she can as they glare at each other.
