This episode is essential viewing because:
Jessie catches a Lickitung.

Fireworks go off at the beginning of this episode. It/s the Princess Festival! A day honoring all girls and women, when guys have to do whatever they say. James says it's no different from any other day. All the shops are having sales for women only, while the guys have to carry everything. Misty and Jessie are both on shopping sprees. Misty wishes Princess Day was every day.

She, Ash, Brock and Pikachu are at a restaurant. Misty is eating a bunch of food, unlike Ash and Brock because guys have to pay. Brock sees a pretty girl and asks if she'd like for him to be her Prince. She says that cute and that he'll meet a nice girl when he grows up big and strong. Misty points out a sign to Ash. He thinks she's pointing to one with an actor on it, but she was looking at one with something about a big sale.

Jessie is off shopping with James and Meowth in tow. They say their lines as Jessie tries on outfits and James and Meowth throw some stuff around. James says it's boring. Jessie says that she's not just shopping for herself. Meowth hopes she got something for them, but she says she's getting stuff for the Boss, so he won't get as angry at them for not stealing Pikachu. James says she won't have much luck unless she finds a half price Pikachu. Suddenly a Lickitung steps out from behind some bushes. It then proceeds to eat all of the stuff Jessie got for the Boss. It spits out the clothes, though. Jessie gets angry and sends Arbok, but Lickitung Licks it and it faints. Jessie says that she'll show it and catches it with a Pokeball, saying she'll deal with it later. Now she has to go give her creditcard a nice workout.

All the girls are fighting over clothes, while Ash, Brock and Pikachu sit off the side side. Ash comments that he didn't think shopping could be so dangerous. James says he wouldn't be tough enough to be a woman. Misty and Jessie start arguing over something they both want. Jessie says they should have a Pokemon battle to decide, but then some lady comes along and takes the thing. They both get mad, but the lady looks pretty mean, so they say never mind.

A voice comes out over the intercom. It says that the Queen of the Princess Festival Contest will begin in a few minutes. Brock is happy because there will be lots of pretty girls. The prize will be a special Princess Festival Pokemon Doll Set and you get your picture taken with actor Viarello Cappuchino! Ash and Brock are trampled as a few hundered girls run over them. Jessie says theyll use the contest to settle the argument.

All the girls line up, wearing kimonos. Misty has her hair down and it looks a lot longer than it should. She looks better with it down. Misty says she'll have no problem winning. Jessie says only if theres a pee-wee division. The announcer says some stuff about how the girls have to be as lovely as a Jynx, as something as a Jigglypuff, and as graceful as an Oddish. He turns into all these Pokemon as he says them. That Viarello guy is sitting next to him. He says something about the prize and we see the doll set. It's the only set.

Jessie says that Misty will lose and the announcer tells everyone to get their Pokeballs ready. It isn't just a contest of beauty, you have to be a great Pokemon trainer too. Viarello says it's simple, all the girls get split into two divisions and they battle until only one is left.

Misty begs Ash and Brock to let her borrow their Pokemon. Ash says the Pokemon won't listen to just anyone. Misty says he can tell them to listen to her. Pikachu goes with Misty. Misty tells Ash and Brock about how she really wants to win the dolls because her three sisters all had sets, but she only got broken hand-me-downs. She says that she will get those dolls! Brock says that maybe it's a girl thing. Ash says it's probably a Misty thing and she hits him. Brock says she can borrow their Pokemon. She chooses Pikachu, Bulbasaur, Vulpix and her Staryu so she'll have a well balanced team. Ash and Brock tell the Pokemon to do what Misty says.

Battle! A girl sends out a Kingler, and Misty sends Bulbasaur, which wraps up the Kingler with Vine Whip. She beats the girl's Pinsir, Cubone and Raticate with Bulbasaur. She won! Jessie goes against a girl who sends Primeape. James says the only Pokemon Jessie has is Arbok, but she decided to borrow Weezing. Meowth says she needs more than two Pokemon. she says he''s forgetting something. There is a very long pause. Meowth remembers that hes a Pokemon! She sends him against the Primeape and he is defeated in one hit. She beats the Primeape with Arbok.

After a bunch of battles, Jessie and Misty are the only two left. Brock says that neither will give in. James is surprised that Jessie is going to play by the rules. Jessie says that she's always hated the Princess Festival because she could never win the dolls. Meowth says he thought all girls loved it. Jessie is upset because she never got the dolls and James say he hopes it will be different this time.

A bell sounds. It's time for the final battle. It's Misty vs. Jessie and the announcer wonder who will be the victor. Jessie shouts that she will be and the guy says that Jessie will be the victor! James and Meowth cheer for Jessie. Jessie sends Arbok and Misty sends Pikachu, who shocks Arbok. Jessie sends Weezing, and then Meowth, but they are all beaten. Jessie says it's over, but Meowth reminds her she still has that Lickitung. She send it out. Misty is surprised that Team Rocket has another Pokemon.

The Pokedex says that Lickitung's tongue is twice its body length and is used to battle and gather food. Misty has Pikachu use Thundershock, but Lickitung licks it and Pikachu faints. The announcer says it's getting exciting. Brock says Jessie might win. Ash says to send Bulbasaur and she does. But it is also beaten and so is Vulpix. The announcer says that Jessie is making a comeback. Jessie might become Queen of the festival.

Misty says she won't lose and sends Staryu. But out comes Psyduck as usual. Jessie says it won't be much to defeat such a pathetic Pokemon. Lickitung licks Psyduck, but nothing happens! Lickitung wraps its tongue around Psyduck, but still nothing. Misty tells Psyduck good work and to use Water Gun. Unfortunately, it can't remember how. Jessie tells Lickitung to use Tackle, but it just stands there. The announcer says the Pokemon are ignoring their trainers! Ash says he doesn't know Psyduck. Viarello says it looks like Psyduck has a headache.

Misty tells Psyduck to use Confusion! It does and Lickitung hits itself with its own tongue! It flies into Team Rocket and they all go flying. Misty won and is the Queen of the Princess Festival! Brock and Ash say congratulations. She says she couldn't have done it without Psyduck. She decides to send the dolls back to the Cerulean Gym. She says she wishes she could see the looks on her sister's faces!

In a forest somewhere, Jessie is crying over losing. Lickitung licks her and she says thanks for trying to cheer her up. James and Meowth come, wearing some weird outfits. He says that since Jessie didn't win the real dolls.... He then either gives her a set of dolls of them and their Pokemon, or they dress up or something.
