This episode is essential viewing because: Ash defeats Blaine and earns a Volcano Badge.

Magmar uses Fire Blast on Pikachu! When the fire is gone, so is Pikachu. Is this the end of the cute little guy? Pikachu is hanging off the edge of the platform over the lava, slightly burned. It pulls itself up and is pretty tired now. Blaine wonder when Ash is going to give up. Ash says that getting a Volcano Badge isn't worth losing Pikachu and he gives up. Blaine says he made a wise decision. He might have been disqualified if he had continued. He says that Pikachu should go rest now. Ash asks if he can get another chance to fight Blaine. He says maybe someday. Ash tells Pikachu he's sorry and that they'll get that badge someday.

Later, Ash is cleaning Pikachu up near a spring, saying that they'll beat Blaine. Misty can't believe that he still wants to battle Blaine. Magmar's Fire Blast is way too powerful! Brock says that there are plenty of other Gyms he could battle at. Ash says that he would win if he used Charizard, but it won't listen.

In another part of the hot spring, we see two snorkels sticking up out of the water. It's Team Rocket. They say that the water is getting too hot. They both jump out of the water. Meowth says they'd never be able to stand the heat in the volcano if they couldn't stand that. James says they have to try to get that Magmar; it beat Pikachu! Meowth says that they'll go in the volcano and tell Magmar that it's won some sort of prize. Then when it lets its guard down, they'll freeze it with Freeze Blasters. Meowth wonders where he'll get gloves with three fingers.

They go down into the volcano, carrying the Freeze Blasters. They come to the door and Meowth gets burned when he tries to open it. They manage to kick it open. Jessie wonders where Magmar is. Meowth then puts on a dress and make-up and says that Magmar has won the Grand Prize in a Pokémon contest, a trip to Mt. Vesuvius! Jessie and James kick him, saying that he shouldn't always be in the spotlight. Then the lava in the pool shoots into the air and Magmar appears on the platform. It looks at them suspiciously. Meowth shouts for Jessie and James to freeze it, and they do. They start dancing around, saying how the Boss will reward them. Unfortunutly, Magmar has melted the ice. They panic and Meowth says to Freeze Blast the whole place. They start firing randomly, freezing the walls, which start to crack.

Back up by the hot springs near the Big Riddle Inn, everything starts shaking. Blaine, still wearing the wig, comes running out, saying that he felt all the shaking while on the way to the lavatory. Of course, he says, everywhere in a volcano is a lava-tory. Ash says now he knows how Blaine comes up with his riddles. They all go down into his hidden Gym, where almost everything is frozen. Blaine is also frozen. He says that ice in a volcano is freezer burn. Ash tells him to cool it with the jokes.

Team Rocket is still firing all over the place. Blaine asks what would happen if the entire volcano were to be frozen? Ash said it would be a snow cone! Blaine said it wasn't a riddle. All this ice will cause a chain reaction. The ice will cause there to be a huge eruption. Rocks and ice start falling and the chains on the platform start breaking. Magmar jumps off as it falls into the lava. Team Rocket it standing on a rock, which is shot out of the volcano by steam.

Suddenly, lava starts shooting out of cracks in the rock. Blaine says that there are only minutes until it explodes. He tells Magmar to block the crater with rocks to try and stop the lava flow. Pikachu tries to help by getting a rock, but Blaine says only a Fire Pokémon could stand the heat. Magmar starts throwing rocks in the lava. Ash sends Charizard to help Magmar, but it just goes to sleep on a rock. Charizard watches as Magmar continues to throw rocks into the lava. Suddenly the lava bursts through; the rocks arent holding it. Misty says they should run, but Blaine says there is nowhere to run. The entire island will be destroyed by the eruption.

Then, something surprising happens. Charizard goes to help Magmar. Blaine says that two Pokémon are much more powerful than one! Brock helps by sending Onix and Geodude. Misty and Ash send Staryu and Squirtle to keep them cool while they work. The four Pokémon stand there for a moment, while Misty goes after Psyduck who came out and Ash chases after Jigglypuff, who had followed them. Pikachu jumps out and they all get to work. They all starts blocking the lava with rocks, with Pikachu helping and Staryu and Squirtle keeping them cool. Togepi tries to help, but loses its balance. Misty catches it before it falls in the lava and says it's too small to help.

Soon the flow stops. Charizard and Magmar put in the last rocks. They look at each other with fire in their eyes. Blaine says that he wants to thank Ash by - Then Ash interupts, saying, by giving him a Volcano Badge? Blaine says no! He'll give him another chance to battle him!

Blaine says that they will battle on on the volcano in the crater, where there are several tall pillars sticking out of the lava. He says it's above where he found Magmar. It'll be a 1 on 1 match and he choses Magmar. Ash is about to chose Pikachu, but Charizard steps forward. It wants to fight! Brock says that it probably wants to because it saw how strong Magmar was, so it wants to test its strength. Ash says it's going to be a great Pokémon match. He yells go Charizard, but it's gone! Pikachu points to where it is, on a pillar across from Magmar. Ash says Charizard might still need more training.

The two Fire Pokémon watch each other and Magmar's eyes glow. They both use Flamethrower and it meets between them, causing an explosion! Magmar uses Fire Blast, but Charizard catches it, but it starts pushing it back. It manages to stop and pushes the fire so it misses it. Magmar usesSkull Bash, hitting Charizard. Charizard falls towards the lava, but flies up at the last moment. It flies up into the sun's light so Magmar can't see it, then it dives down hitting Magmar. They both grab each other by the claws and push against each other. Magmar leaps over Charizard and grabs onto its neck. Ash tells Charizard to fly up, it won't stand a chance if Magmar gets it in the lava, but Magmar jumps down, pulling Charizard into the lava.

Ash says its against the rules for Magmar to do that. Blaine said that since Ash agreed to have the battle on the volcano, they can also battle under it. Ash starts to cry a bit, afraid that his Charizard is gone. Suddenly, it shoots out of the lava, Magmar still holding onto it. Ash tells it to use its aerial Submission. Charizard starts flying up while spinning and Magmar gets dizzy. Ash says the battle is over and tells Charizard to use Seismic Toss. Charizard flies up higher and flies in loops in the air. Then it grabs Magmar by the arm and throws it back down to the volcano. It hits the lava, causing a huge explosion.

Charizard lands, but then Magmar jumps back out of the lava and lands on a pillar, seemingly unharmed, but then it faints. Charizard roars in triumph and Ash and Pikachu cheer. Blaine brings Magmar back. Ash tries to bring Charizard back, but it roasts him, as usual. Charizard just roars and spits fire into the air.

They return to the inn. Blaine says he has another riddle. What is alway red, but never has any words? A Volcano Badge! Ash says he never could have won without Charizard. Misty thought that it had started to be obedient. Ash says it'll learn someday. They leave. Brock says that they should head to the Gym in Viridian City. Misty says Ash could get an Earth Badge. Ash asks why she didn't tell him about the Gym when they were in Viridian. Misty says because they were arguing, but she can't remember why! Brock says it's because Ash destroyed her- Ash interupts, saying it doesn't matter, and starts walking away. Misty remembers that he owes her a bike and chases after him.
