The episode begins with Ash trying to teach his Turtwig Energy Ball, however with no success. Dawn's childhood friend Kenny is trying to help, but Turtwig is still not being able to use Energy Ball properly. Ash realises that, as it's the Solaceon Contest soon, Kenny should really be getting back to doing his own training. Kenny agrees, and looks over at Dawn who is also training hard with her newly - evolved Ambipom. Dawn is training her Ambipom to spin around and use Swift at the same time, sending many stars flying in all directions and looking stunning. The stars created by Swift also crash into each other, creating sparkles that sprinkle over everyone. Dawn thinks it looks very pretty and happily gives Ambipom a poffin as a treat for working so hard. The two soon get back to practicing again.

Meanwhile, Team Rocket's Jessie, dressed up as Jessalina, is looking forward to the contest, in which she will be entering Dustox. James and Meowth are worried because if Jessie doesn't win the contest, she will get really mad with them as they were supposed to think up a good strategy for her to use in the contest!

The next day is the Solaceon contest! Kenny, Dawn and Jessie are all dressed up and ready, and are all confident that they are going to win.

The first contestant is Kenny, who is using his Breloom. Breloom starts off with a beautiful Stun Spore. It then uses Energy Ball, and then finishes off by bursting the Energy Ball with Mach Punch, causing sparks to fly around the room. The Judges all love it, and Dawn begins to feel worried.

Many more contestants with their Pokemon perform, and then Jessie is next. Jessie sends out her Dustox, which creates shiny sparks whilst it flies to show off it's beautiful scales. Dustox then uses Whirlwind on Jessie, which causes her to fly up in the air. The crowd love it. Dustox then uses Psybeam and creates an explosion, which looks like it could have completely made mince meat out of Jessie, but somehow she and Dustox are fine! The crowd cheer, and Ash notices that she got the biggest cheer so far.

Next up is Dawn, who send out Ambipom and starts off by showing the crowd it's Double Hit attack. Then she moves on to her swift strategy she has been practicing. Ambipom spins round faster and faster, using Swift and causing the stars created by Swift to bash into each other and create rainbow coloured sparks.

Dawn was the last contestant, so now everyone has to wait for the results of who'd be going through to the next round, the battling stage. All of Dawn's friends think she was amazing. Suddenly, the MC announces that the judges have made a decision! The pictures of the coordinators who are going through to the next round appear on screen. Jessie is thrilled to see she is there, and so is Kenny but...Dawn doesn't make it. Dawn is out of the contest. All of Dawn's friends and Pokemon are shocked, and although Dawn is upset at first, she soon gets over it.

The final battle is between Jessie and Kenny, whoever wins this battle will get the ribbon. The battle is very close, with Dustox managing to hit Kenny's Prinplup with a strong psybeam and popping all of it's bubbles from it's Bubblebeam attack with it's Poison Sting. The time then runs out, and the winner is...Jessie and Dustox! Jessie is thrilled to get the ribbon, and James and Meowth are happy too!

That evening, Dawn is still quite upset, and isn't sure if she should enter the next contest. She says good bye to Kenny, who is leaving so he can prepare for his next contest. Dawn tries to not seem too upset about losing, but when she goes to bed she begins to cry.

The next day, Ash and Brock are waiting impatiently for Dawn to get up, when they suddenly see Dawn's frond Zoey, who had watched the whole thing on TV. She gets Dawn up, and tells her she wants to battle her based on what she did yesterday. When Dawn is dressed and ready, she begins to battle Zoey using the swift technique, and Zoey explains that the reason Dawn didn't get through is because the contest is suppose to be about the Pokemon, and when Ambipom was using Swift nobody could even see Ambipom! Dawn understands, and decides to just accept the defeat, knowing that because of it, she will be able to grow even stronger and hopefully win her next contest!
