Already out in America, and now out in the UK!
Pokémon Pinball is probably the best Pinball game on the Game Boy, here I'll explain why.
When you start, you select a table, either red or blue, and off you go. At the start of the game, you select a location to start in and fire your ball. The concept of Pokémon is capturing them all, so to follow suit, that's what you do here! In order to capture a Pokémon, you have to do these things, (Looking at the picture of the 2 tables might help you understand more).
On the Blue field (table)...
- Get the ball around the right loop 3 times
- Get the ball into Cloyster's mouth/shell. This activates catch 'em mode.
- A Pokémon picture will appear in the middle of the bottom half of the table
- Hit the Shellder's 6 times.
- Hit the animated Pokémon 3 times to capture it.
By the way: The ball is a Pokeball, but it can be upgraded to a Great, Ultra or Master Ball
Now to capture Pokémon on the red field.
- Get the ball around the right loop 3 times
- Get the ball into Bellsprout's mouth, activating catch 'em mode.
- Hit the Voltorb 6 times.
- Hit the Pokémon 3 times
- Congratulations!
Other interesting notes:
- You can only get evolved Pokémon by evolving Pokémon you've caught in your current game, meaning, if you catch a Pikachu and get a game over, when you start a new game, you'll have to catch another Pikachu to get a Raichu. This makes it very difficult.
- Some Pokémon are only found in specific locations, so you can change location by hitting Poliwag or Psyduck three times on Blue and hitting Diglett three times on Red.
- If you go over all three circles above the Shellders or Voltorbs (You can't see the ones above the Voltorbs on the picture), your ball will get upgraded. This will double and triple scores.
- If you get the word cave filled in, just above the flippers, Pikachu kickback will be activated, so if a ball goes where no ball can be recovered, Pikachu saves the day.
- When you capture a Pokémon, a bonus rotator starts and you stop it by pressing A. Bonuses may be some points, 2 Pikachu kickbacks instead of one, or a bonus multiplier.
FINAL SCORES!
Graphics: 10
Very colourful and bold
Sound: 8.5
Several Backgrounds and Sound FX. Digitised Pikachu voice. Very lively compared to Red, Blue and Yellow. More suiting, the gentle tune of Pallet Town just wouldn't sound correct.
Game Play (How fun is it?): 10
VERY! It's difficult at first, but eventually you'll get it right. After 8 months of play (with gaps) I still can't master it.
Replay Value
It'll take you ages to complete your Pokédex, and then you can try and beat old high scores.
