Mystery Dungeon Red and Blue: Overview | Changes between the games, and the elements of the game that are new

So what's different in Mystery Dungeon compared to the normal, mainstream Pokémon games? There are many different things! I'm going to explain the new things, and changes from the normal games that are in Mystery Dungeon. These include move changes, new moves, and- hey, just read ahead!

New Battling System

There is still a turn-based element in the Mystery Dungeon games. However, it is different. Since it's almost free-roam (you can now move diagonally), you take a step onto a tile. Each step counts as a 'turn' as you would have in the normal games. Alternatively, if you decide to press A and B together, you'll stay on the spot for a turn. The same happens if you use an attack, including your normal A button tackle attack (which uses no PP). However, when you hold down the A and B buttons, the Pokémon on the dungeon floor will move much faster, but your belly (see: Belly) will go down as with walking around the dungeon.

In Mystery Dungeon, you are still able to use level-up attacks, though the level they learn them at is changed. Most of these, unlike the original series, will miss. Mystery Dungeon's battling system is different in that, a lot of the moves are able to miss. Even those that have 100% accuracy in the other games might fail. There are exceptions to this, such as Bubblebeam.

New Moves

There are two new moves exclusive to Mystery Dungeon Red & Blue Rescue Team. They are Vacuum Cut and Wide Slash. You get both of these as HMs from Far-off Sea at BF50 (Wide Slash) BF72 (Vacuum Cut). This is what both of these moves do:

Vacuum Cut
Accuracy: 100%
PP: 7
Damages all enemies in the room you are in. In corridors, attacks foe in front.

Wide Slash
Accuracy: 88%
PP: 10
Damages the foe you are facing, and the foe to the left and right of you.

Move Changes

A lot of the moves in the games work differently to how they do in the mainstream ones. For example, Substitute, instead of turning you into a doll, turns the opponent you are facing into one. They stay as this for a certain amount of turns. They also count as being on your rescue team. With this, other Pokémon in the dungeon will attack it, thinking it's apart of your rescue team.

Another big change is how Protect, Detect, Attract and Smokescreen work. With Protect and Detect, instead of the one turn of immunity to moves, you get several allowing you to attack your foes. Attract makes the foe unable to hit you for a set amount of time, as does Smokescreen. With Smokescreen they gain the "Whiffer" status condition. This basically means they cannot hit you for a few turns. Along with "Whiffer" there are also "Cringe" (basically flinch) which stops you from attacking for two 'turns' and Paralysis now stops you from attacking. It halves your 'speed' meaning that Pokémon around you will attack twice or move twice. You can move after the second time they move. You have to wait for Paralysis to end. There are also times you will be immobilised. This means you cannot move, but can attack if you are attacked.

Agility allows you to attack or move twice in the same 'turn'. This can be used three times to make you move at four times normal speed so you could attack four times when the foe can only attack once after all four of your attacks.

There are many more, so you will have to play the game to see the differences.

IQ

In Mystery Dungeon Red & Blue Rescue Team, Happiness is out. The moves Return and Frustration are now rendered useless. Or so you think. Mystery Dungeon brings in the inclusion of IQ. This is like a separate stat which not only powers Return when it's raised, but gives you access to new abilities such as "Energy Saver", "Trap Seer" and the sought after, "Super-Mobile". You increase this by eating Gummies. The higher your IQ, the more damage Return does and Frustration's power will decrease. You want an IQ of 1 for Frustration to be at its highest. However, the maximum you will hit with Return and Frustration will be 45. Maximum IQ is 12

Belly

Belly is another new value in the Mystery Dungeon saga. Every few steps you take will reduce your Belly by 1. You start off with 100 Belly. Once it runs out, your HP will start to fall and in the end, you will be KO'd. This can be countered by Apples and Gummies around the dungeons. Apples give back 50 Belly. There are also Big Apples which give you 100 back and Huge Apples which fully fill your Belly and increase your maximum Belly by 10. The amount you get from Gummies depends on the colour and your Pokémon's likes and dislikes of them.

Items

There are lots new items in Mystery Dungeon Red & Blue Rescue Team. Most of these are Seeds, Orbs and Scarfs or Bands. There are lots of Seeds, ranging from the Reviver Seed (which will revive you if you are KO'd) and the Sleep Seed (which can be thrown to put an opponent to sleep). Orbs range from the Escape Orb (allows you to escape from a dungeon) to others such as One-Hit Orb (automatically KOs the Pokémon in front of you, cannot be used on Bosses) and Switcher Orb (swaps places with the Pokémon in front of you). Bands and Scarfs are common as the Special Band and Pass Scarf. There is also the fabled Friend Bow which helps with recruiting Pokémon.

Pokémon Changes

While there's only one Pokémon that has changed, I though I should list it anyway. Shedinja now has five HP. Yes, five. Also, if you try to attack it with your normal A attack, you will only do 1 damage each time. However, super-effective moves will KO it, as will Gravelerocks, Geo Pebbles and the other various damaging thrown items.

I hope that this has helped you in some way.
