Ranger Walkthrough: Part 1 |

The game begins with a letter of invitation from Spenser, the Ringtown Ranger Leader, to become a Pokemon Ranger because of your skills and motivation, and your various qualities. The letter tells you to meet him in the Fall City harbour so you may become a Pokemon Ranger.

The game will then ask you to choose a gender. The gender doesn’t affect the gameplay, but it does affect what partner you have. If you choose the male, you will receive Minun as your partner. Alternatively, if you choose the female, you will receive Plusle.

After you have chosen your gender, you will arrive at the harbour. You will see an excited child tell you that you are in Fall City. Proceed up the harbour and a man will tell you that you can move by using the Control Pad or the stylus.

At the far end of the harbour, a boy will tell you that something is inside the crate in front of him, and he asks you to touch it. When you have touched it with your Stylus, a Minun or Plusle will pop out and run way from the harbour. If you try to leave the harbour, a woman will tell you to try talking to people to waste time, so go to the building, which is the tourist center.

Talk to everyone inside, and then try to leave the harbour. A man will approach you, and will inspect you, and tells you the uniform is big on you. He will introduce himself as Spenser. He tells you he enjoyed receiving your letters, because it brought back his memories of his ambitions of becoming a Ranger. He then invites you to his Ranger base, but before that, he tells you the names of the 4 cities in the Fiore Region: Fall City, Ringtown, Summerland and Wintown. Each of these cities has a Ranger base.

After the conversation, you will hear a cry, and you dash off to investigate. You see Minun or Plusle being attacked by a Houndoom, and you must calm down Minun/Plusle. Spenser gives you a Capture Styler so you can capture Minun or Plusle and calm it down. You have no idea how to use a Capture Styler, so Spenser shows you by capturing the Houndoom. Pay attention, because you will need to know all this. After Spenser captures the Houndoom, you need to capture Minun/Plusle. This is simple, as it only takes a few loops to capture and it doesn’t attack.

Spenser will praise you, and then release the Houndoom. He then explains that you cannot take a Pokemon out of it’s home environment, so you must release it when you are leaving that environment. Spenser can see the Minun/Plusle likes you, but you must release it, so you do so. Spenser then gives you a certificate to prove you are a Ranger. He tells you that you would usually take a test, but that test is not needed because he has already seen you in action. He then asks you to sign it, so you must choose a name for your character. You will be asked to confirm your name, which will be put on the certificate. Spenser tells you that you are a proper Pokemon Ranger. He also tells you that you need to gain experience. Spenser then calls his Fearow to fly you over to Ringtown, where you will be stationed. As Fearow arrives to take you away, you will see Minun or Plusle craftily join you.

When you arrive, you see the character of the opposite gender appear from the Ranger Station, and Minun or Plusle will run away in fear, being in an unfamiliar environment. Spenser says it should come back when it feels braver. He also says you should return it to it’s natural habitat. The other character welcomes Spenser back, and they will introduce themselves to you as either Solana as the female, or Lunick as the male. Spenser will then introduce you. They will also introduce their partner Pokemon, which is the opposite of your own. You will then go inside the Ranger Base.

Inside, you will meet another Ranger named Murph, and his partner, Slowpoke. They’re both very slow and lazy, and often get stuck with the simplest of missions. Spenser then gathers everyone together. He will again say that you need to gain experience as a Ranger, but you are an official member of the Ringtown Ranger Base. As Spenser finished talking, a man named Larry will rush inside asking for help. He tells Spenser that his Pokemon has ran off into Lyra Forest. Spenser asks you to go capture if as your first mission. Larry is sceptical, so Spenser agrees to meet you by the entrance to Lyra Forest to make sure nothing happens.

Solana will give you a brief talk about the other functions of your styler, and the woman at the counter of the Ranger Base will tell you that she can recharge your styler if it is damaged. Do so when you can, because it might become a necessity. She also tells you to use the machine next to the counter to save the game. After this, you can exit the base. You can either look around the town, or go straight to Lyra Forest for your mission. The entrance to Lyra Forest is at the very top of the town. As you try to go in, Solana or Lunick will come and ask you if you are nervous. They will ask to tag along, and they go ahead and wait for you.

As you enter the forest, you will see a screen saying your first mission. Spenser will ask you if you are ready, and he reminds you off your mission. Of course, you have no idea what the Pokemon is yet. Spenser asks what the Pokemon was, but Larry is tongue-tied, so he can’t tell you. He gives an explanation of how it looks, but it’s not very useful. Spenser will go with you, so don’t worry about failing. Just catch all the different kinds of Pokemon you see, for experience for your styler and the mission.

The Pokemon you can find in this area are Zigzagoon, Chikorita and Taillow. When you try to capture Zigzagoon and Chikorita, it will say they are wild, so they do not belong to Larry. When you try to capture Taillow, it says it belongs to someone, so it must be Larry’s. Spenser will congratulate you, and then he will tell you he knew what Pokemon Larry had, but he kept it quiet. He wanted to see how you would deal with the situation, and he says you passed your first mission. You then return Taillow to Larry, who thanks you and apologises for his earlier behaviour.

After Larry leaves, a boy arrives and says that some of the trees are on fire, which means you have to deal with it. Spenser tells you about Target Clearing, which is using Pokemon’s abilities in the field to solve problems. In this situation, you need to douse the flames using a water Pokemon’s powers. If you touch a target, it tells you what move you need to solve the problem or remove the obstacle. In this case, you need a Pokemon who can use a water power of 1. Spenser finds a Mudkip, and douses the flames on one of the trees. Spenser then asks you to douse the other tree by capturing your own Mudkip. After dousing the flames, your first mission is complete and you return to the Ranger Base.
