The fourthcoming Game Boy replacement, the Nintendo DS looks set to be the best thing ever. Using some clever technology, Japanese fans are getting a treat.

This news item is more than 45 days old. Updates are unlikely and newer information may already be available.

The Nintendo DS, for those not in the know is the new Game Boy- it has two screens, a touch screen, and so much technical wizardry, it'd have been locked in the tower of London and proclaimed a witch in less enlightened times.

Anyway, the DS has a built in 802.11b wireless adapter- the same thing that wireless computer networks use. Long story short, it works like a link cable but without any cables.

Word on the street is that when "you" (that is to say, "You, Japanese readers") go to see the next Pokémon film (7? 8? I've lost count) next summer, if you have a GBA Pokémon game in your cartridge, you'll be able to wirelessly download a new Pokémon to your game.

Aside from being exciting from a rare Pokémon point of view, this is exciting from a technical point of view- it looks as if the DS can interact with wireless networks and do what the wifi network tells it without the need for DS software. That is to say, if my guess is correct, the network will say "Oi! DS! Send this data to that GBA cartridge", and the DS will go "alright, but you owe me for this".

Could this mean that some clever person would be able to haX0r the system so anyone can distribute Pokémon on their Wireless LAN? I'm probably talking rubbish, so let's just enjoy the prospect of easily distributed new Pokémon.

More as we get it. We'll update even if we don't with photos of guinea pigs in a comic strip lamenting over the relaunch of British comic "The Dandy".
