Nintendo announce the next DS incarnation!

This news item is more than 45 days old. Updates are unlikely and newer information may already be available.

Nintendo of Japan today announced (in typically unreadable characters) that the follow up to the DS and DSi will unsurprisingly by called the Nintendo 3DS. And excitingly, as the name suggests, claim that it will boast 3D gaming effects WITHOUT the need for the funny 3D glasses!

The console will be officially launched at the E3 gaming convention in June, will apparently launch with a host of 3D-ready games and will feature full backwards compatibility with DS and DSi games. I'm doubting we'll see GBA ports on it though.

t3.com have suggested that it will build on technology which uses the console's camera to track your eyes and creates a 3D illusion on the two screens based on the position of your head, which frankly would be absolutely astonishing.

Although the official name might not turn out to be the 3DS, I find it quite appropriate. And nice even. Yeah, nice. Wow, I remember that.

I heard that it might be on sale next month, which, quite frankly, is a big headdesker.
They should extend it all the way to March of next year just to be reasonable.

Well, that pretty much confirms Generation V appearing on a console other than the DS. Unless they do what they supposedly did with Ye Olde Gold and Silver being able to be played on old Game Boys/Game Boy Pockets, but I highly doubt it.

I also doubt I'll be able to afford the 3DS, which is quite a downer (or I might not be complaining in the first place ;.; )

3D gives me headaches, so I'll be happy to stick with my plain old flat 2 deminsonal DS yep yep!

Still, looks like we're getting closer and closer to holograms, eh?

Sounds rather interesting. I thought it was supposed to have a tilt function though.

I still have a perfectly functional DSLite from way back in 06/07. I haven't even bothered with the DSi/XL. I don't expect to be buying this new DS. 3D has become a bit overrated anyway; cool and interesting at first, but then it becomes implemented into EVEYTHING, and ends up being totally lame. A big step in gaming, yes, but I expect it to be passed up pretty soon. Instead of going with thes types of crazes, they should come up with something completely brand-new.

it IS brand new for handheld game systems. I predict it will have a camera, a touch screen, and a tilt function. about $200 us dollars.
