Hidden Power (TM 10) is a strange move. All Pokemon that learn TM’s can learn it. You may notice that when you teach your Pokemon Hidden Power, it may say "It’s Not Very Effective" or "It’s Super Effective!" against different types, when the move itself is a Normal Type. Well this is because Hidden Power’s actual type depends on the Pokemon using it. Each Pokemon has a different type and power, ranging from 30~70.
So what decides the type and power of my Pokemon’s Hidden Power? Each Pokemon has a set of genes, otherwise known as "IV’s" these vary from Pokemon to Pokemon, ranging from 0~31. These are what make up your Pokemon’s stats. The type and power of the Hidden Power for a specific Pokemon depends on the combination of these IV’s. There is a formula to work out your Pokemon’s Hidden Power type:
Hidden Power’s Type = (S1 + S2 + S3 + S4 + S5 + S6) x 15 / 63
Before you rush off saying, "What is all this S1, S2 malarkey?" let me explain. Before you can work out the Hidden Power, you need to work out your Pokemon’s IV’s. The best way to do this is to first EV train your Pokemon, and then put it’s stats into an online calculator that does it all for you.
After you have worked out the IV’s you can work out the Hidden Power type by replacing the "S1, S2" etc with numbers.
If the IV for HP is odd, then replace S1 with 1
If the IV for Attack is odd, then replace S2 with 2
If the IV for Defence is odd, then replace S3 with 4
If the IV for Speed is odd, then replace S4 with 8
If the IV for Special Attack is odd, then replace S5 with 16
If the IV for Special Defence is odd, then replace S6 with 32
If the IV for any of the IV’s is not odd, then replace the corresponding "S" with "0".
So, if we had a Muk with these IV’s:
HP: | 21 |
Attack: | 28 |
Defence: | 25 |
Speed: | 13 |
Special Attack: | 30 |
Special Defence: | 31 |
We would replace the "S" in the formula with this:
Type = (1 + 0 + 4 + 8 + 0 + 32) x 15 / 63
Type = (45) x 15 / 63
Type = 675 / 63
Type = 10.714 (rounded up to 11)
So the Hidden Power Type is 11. This means nothing, unless compared with a chart to show what each number represents as an Attack Type:
Type = 0, then it’s Fighting
Type = 1, then it’s Flying
Type = 2, then it’s Poison
Type = 3, then it’s Ground
Type = 4, then it’s Rock
Type = 5, then it’s Bug
Type = 6, then it’s Ghost
Type = 7, then it’s Steel
Type = 8, then it’s Fire
Type = 9, then it’s Water
Type = 10, then it’s Grass
Type = 11, then it’s Electric
Type = 12, then it’s Psychic
Type = 13, then it’s Ice
Type = 14, then it’s Dragon
Type = 15, then it’s Dark
From this, we can see that our Muk’s Hidden Power was of the Electric Type (Not very useful but meh :P)
Now we have the type, but what about the power? For that, we need another equation, with another set of variables (like S1, S2)
Hidden Power’s Strength = (A1 + A2 + A3 + A4 + A5 + A6) x 40 / 63 + 30
Here we go again ¬_¬;
If your Pokemon’s:
IV for HP divided by 4 has a remainder of 2 or 3, then A1 = 1
IV for Attack divided by 4 has a remainder of 2 or 3, then A2 = 2
IV for Defence divided by 4 has a remainder of 2 or 3, then A3 = 4
IV for Speed divided by 4 has a remainder of 2 or 3, then A4 = 8
IV for Special Attack divided by 4 has a remainder of 2 or 3, then A5 = 16
IV for Special Defence divided by 4 has a remainder of 2 or 3, then A6 = 32
Wow, that’s a lot to comprehend o.O;
So, back to our Muk...
Here are its IV’s again:
HP: | 21 |
Attack: | 28 |
Defence: | 25 |
Speed: | 13 |
Special Attack: | 30 |
Special Defence: | 31 |
To save you the hassle of dividing each of your Pokemon’s IV’s by 4, here’s a list of all the IV’s that will always work: 2, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11, 14, 15, 18, 19, 22, 23, 26, 27, 30 and 31. All the others will = 0 when put into the equation.
From this we can see that:
Strength = (0 + 0 + 0 + 0 + 16 + 32) x 40 / 63 + 30
Strength = (48) x 40 / 63 + 30
Strength = 1920 / 63 + 30
Strength = 30 + 30 = 60
The base power for this Hidden Power is 60.
That’s pretty much all there is to it, just plug in a load of numbers and you’re away! Any queries don’t hesitate to PM or email me on: soad_freak666@hotmail.com
