Item Hold Evolution
A new method of evolution in this game is the Pokemon evolving while holding a certain item while levelling up, much like the similar aspect of item evolving through trade in the previous games. This comes into effect with three Pokemon, each involving old Pokemon. These all being time specific, meaning the item needs to be held during that time of day.

Gender Evolutions
These Pokemon are Burmy and Combee. If we were to use Combee as an example. It will only evolve into Vespiquen if it’s female, but considering that the chance of a female Combee is 12.5%, it makes this evolution harder to obtain.

Happiness Based Evolution
A method of evolution used in some of the previous games, 3 Pokemon in Diamond, Pearl and Platinum evolve based around 2 aspects. Firstly, they must have maximum happiness. This can be checked but using the happiness checker on your Pokétch. When two big hearts appear when the stylus is pressed against that Pokemon, then they have max happiness. Secondly, each of these Pokemon evolves depending on whether they level up during the day, or at night.

Evolution through Attacks
Some Pokemon can now evolve through learning an attack that is within their moveset. Once this attack has been learnt, then when this pokemon is levelled up, it will evolve. All required moves are within the pokemon’s movesets, so don’t worry about giving them TM’s. If your pokemon has passed the level where they have learnt this attack, the attack can be re-taugh by giving the move tutor in Pastoria City a Heart Scale.
