Hi kids! Remember everything the first four generations taught you about finding Wild Pokémon? Forget it all. We're going to start from scratch and cover the mechanics of capturing wild Pokémon, Gen 5 style!
Critical Captures
As anyone who has ever battled before will know, ever since the very beginning there have been "Critical Hits" (or "Hax" as they are known if they go against you) - attacks which randomly decide to do more damage than usual. Well Black and White introduce a similar idea, but this is very much always going to be a good thing for you. Occasionally when throwing a Ball at a Pokémon you will have a Critical Capture - the ball being thrown will make a metal-like sound, shake once and then the Pokémon will either be caught or not, no messing about here. The actual numbers are still unknown, but it's estimated there is just over a 90% chance than if you get a Critical Capture then you will succeed in capturing the Pokémon, regardless of HP and status conditions.
Normal Grass
The most simple method for catching Pokémon is to look in normal grass, which as per usual, you'll find growing all over the place. This hasn't changed at all. Read on.
Tall Grass
Now, something new! Scattered around the Unova region are areas of tall grass. Compare the image of the new grass below with the normal grass above - there's a clear difference. The first instance of the new grass you'll come across is on Route 3 on the way to Nacrene City, where Cheren will stop you and point it out.
I know what you're thinking. "Grass looks different, so what?" Well clever clogs, not only do such patches of grass contain higher level Pokémon than normal patches of grass (nothing special, think Level 10-12 rather than 6-9) BUT, and this is the exciting part, there is a chance that you will enter a double battle with a pair of Wild Pokémon! If this happens, just remember that you can only capture a Pokémon when the other one has been knocked out.
Shaking Areas
Now, something else new!
Take a look at the bottom-left image. Notice anything special about the top-left patch of grass? It's hard to see it properly in an image, but everytime you enter a route there is roughly a 10% chance that you will see a Shaking Area. This might be a patch a shaking grass, dirt being thrown around in a cave), a small whirlpool appearing in the water or even a shadow on a bridge.
These areas are very special. Should you enter them you are guaranteed to find something. Either a wild Pokémon which you would not normally find without entering a Shaking Area, or an item. The best example here is Audino. It can be found on practically every route in the game, but only inside Shaking Areas.
Now that's the basics covered, I think we all deserve a couple of nice tables! Firstly, what items can you find this way?
And now, all the Pokémon you can find this way. Yay!
