We all love getting free stuff now don't we? The great thing about Pickup is that it's the best way to get great gear for your Pokémon without having to rob the local Pokémart with a rag-tag group of Wigglytuff.

In fact, for Black & White there have been a few changes to how useful this ability is.

During Battle

Pickup now has a similar function to Thief. If an allied or opposing Pokémon uses a one-time use item during battle then a Pokémon with Pickup can steal this item as long as they are not already holding one. If there are multiple Pokémon on the same team with Pickup then the one with the highest speed stat will take the item.

Outside of Battle

As usual Pickup allow you to get a free item as long as there are Pokémon on your team with this ability that are not already equipped with an item. After a battle there is a 10% chance of an item being picked up.
