This episode is essential viewing because: Ash's Charizard begins to obey him.

The episode begins, as always, with Ash, Misty, and Tracy travelling aboard Lapras. Ash is admiring his three Orange League badges when suddenly, a boat speeds past them, panicing Lapras. The young man steering, named Tad, quickly apologizes when he sees Misty, who rages that he upset Togepi. Tad invites them aboard his boat. He has heard from the gym leader on Trovita about Ash's battling skills. Rudy had said he used pure power to win. He challenges Ash to a battle. Of course, Ash accepts and they head for a deserted island.

The scene changes to Team Rocket, who on the island where Ash and Tad are about their battle. The decide this would be a good chance for them to try and capture Pikachu. The match begins and Ash starts with Pikachu, who he advises to battle hard so they will have the advantage. Tad uses Poliwrath ,who has a P1 gold belt. Ash scans the opposition with Dexter. Tad explains that the belt was given to them after Poliwrath beat all the other Pokemon in his hometown. Pikachu starts things off with a Thunderbolt, but Poliwrath dodges it with Double Team. After several attempts to shock Poliwrath, Pikachu is finished of with Hypnosis and Water gun.

Using the 'element of surprise,' Ash chooses Charizard. It only used flamethrower attacks, which obviously don't effect it. Tad tells Ash because he can't control Charizard, it's useless and he decides to finish the battle. He orders Poliwrath to use Ice Beam adn all of Charizard's body except for its tail and head are packed into a block of ice! Tad walks away and tells Ash he'll have a rematch when Ash learns to contol Charizard.

As evening falls, the gang make several wood fires, in an attempt to defrost Charizard. Ash, Misty, Tracy and even Pikachu all begin to rub Charizard to get it warmer. Ash talks to Charizard, telling him he may not be the best trainer but only wants whats best for his Pokemon. Charizard closes its eyes and remembers some of it's adventures with his trainer, even as a Charmander and Charmeleon. This makes Charizards flame get bigger and Ash continues to work into the night.

In the morning when Ash wakes up and sees Charizard staring out to sea waving it's healthy tail flame. Suddenly, the ground begins to shake and a strange machine breaks through the earth. It's Team Rocket's new machine, a giant, mechanical mole (not unlike the one on Thunderbirds, just a bit nippier). They trap Pikachu inside a shockproof glass case. Ash rides Charizard as he follows Team Rocket underground. Charizard sets Pikachu free, but Ash is knocked unconcious. He is angry with Team Rocket for hurting his trainer and uses Rage on their machine, sending them blasting of for the final time in the second season. Ash wakes up in time to see this incredible spectacle.

Tad appears on the scene and challenges Ash to a rematch. The 'Pokemon World' theme music begins to play in the background. The battle is, again, Poliwrath versus Charizard. Poliwrath starts off with Water Gun but Charizard flies into the air and uses Ember. Charizard tries take down but is stopped with Mega Kick. Poliwrath gets ready to use Ice Beam and Ash orders Charizard to fly away. It then uses Seismic Toss on tadpole Pokemon. Poliwrath is knocked out and the match goes to Ash. The gang wave farewell to Tad. Ash is ecstatic that Charizard now obeys him and accidentaly slips and bumps into him. It's fiery temper is still there and it launches a flamethrower at Ash, Misty and Tracy. Running for his life, Ash says, "I can take the heat!"
