Today on their journey, Ash & Co. are wandering through a forest when they come across a sign, warning travellers to beware of Ghost Pokémon and advising them to use a Psychic Pokémon as protection. They get spooked by a flock of Pokémon flying overhead and begin to wish they did have a Psychic Pokémon. Brock comes up with an idea; use Psyduck. Though it's a Water Pokémon, it can use Psychic attacks. Deciding to give it a try, Misty sends out Psyduck, telling it to use Confusion to send any Ghost Pokémon they may encounter away.
Suddenly the bushes behind them rustle and an odd head pops to. Misty picks up Psyduck and points it at the head, telling it to use Confusion. Instead, it just stares at it before retreating back inside it's Pokeball. Brock goes over to the head, pointing out that it doesn't look like any Ghost-Type he's seen, wondering weather it really is one. Ash begins wondering the same thing, and moves his hand towards it, snatching it back when it attempts to bite him. A girl comes up to them, telling Ash that it serves him right, saying that her Girafarig certainly isn't a Ghost-Type. The Pokémon stands up, revealing the "head" to be the tail. Surprised, Ash jumps back, but the girl tells him to chill out. After looking it up in his PokéDex, Ash apologises to Girafarig for mistaking it for a Ghost Pokémon. The girl introduces herself as Cherry, saying that it's nice to meet them They introduce themselves to her. Cherry then asks if any of them have a Psychic Pokémon with them as it's dangerous in the woods without one. They tell her that they don't. Misty asks Cherry why she picked a Girafarig to train. She tells them that where she comes from, it's traditional for people to have a Psychic Pokémon as their partner. They ask her where she's from, so she tells them that she is from Len Town, a place just up the road from where they are. Ash asks why everyone there has a Psychic Pokémon, so Cherry explains that there have been Ghost Pokémon living in the woods for hundreds of years, so the town's inhabitants raise Psychic Pokémon to keep the Ghosts from causing trouble
Not far away, Team Rocket are listening in on the conversation. After hearing about Len Town and it Psychic Pokémon population, they decide to try and steal them. Meowth points out that Psychic Pokémon can be tricky and asks how they are supposed to beat them. Jessie tells them that she has a secret weapon.
Sitting down for a small snack, Cherry explains to Ash & Co. about her dream of becoming a Pokémon Master and becoming the first person from her town to win the Johto League Championship. Ash asks if she has any Gym Badges yet, but she tells him that she wants to do some more training before she starts her Pokémon Journey. As Brock come over with some sandwiches, Cherry comments on how Ash and Pikachu seem to know each other very well. She goes on to say that she has been told that when a trainer and their Psychic Pokémon become close, they can communicate with each other psychically. She begins to think that if she and Girafarig could do that, then she could become a Psychic Pokémon Master. She challenges Ash to a battle. He accepts.
The battle is about to begin. A one on one match; Girafarig VS Pikachu. The battle begins as Ash orders Pikachu to use Quick Attack, knocking Girafarig back. Cherry orders Girafarig to use Future Sight. Ash prepares for the attack, but nothing happens. Cherry tells him that he won't know what Future Sight is until it's too late. Brock tells him to be careful, but Ash isn't sure what he's supposed to be careful of. He orders Pikachu to use Thunderbolt, shocking Girafarig. Cherry tells it to hang on until Future Sight kicks in, ordering it to use Stomp. Pikachu uses Agility, dodging the attack. Ash orders it to use Thunderbolt to finish the match, but the wind begins to blow. Future Sight kicks in and a ball of energy appears, knocking Pikachu back. Cherry explains to them that Future Sight is an attack in the future; a sort of time delayed Psychic attack. Ash is impressed. Cherry orders Girafarig to use Psybeam as Ash orders Pikachu to use Thunderbolt. Both attacks connect in midair, exploding in a puff of smoke. Cherry orders Girafarig to use Confusion, but Pikachu uses Thunder, winning the battle. Brock and Misty go over to Cherry, complementing her on an amazing battle. She thanks them, but says that she isn't good enough to be a Psychic Pokémon Master as she isn't able to communicate with Girafarig psychically. Ash come over and tells her that she's a great trainer and that she will win a ton of badges. She thanks him before pointing out that he and Pikachu seem like and unbeatable team. Misty puts it down to luck. Cherry then invites them to go with her back to Len Town and see all of the Psychic Pokémon.
Walking through Len Town, Ash & Co. notice a wide variety of Psychic Pokémon. Suddenly an Abra Teleports onto Ash. A woman runs over, telling him not to let it get away. As she runs over, it Teleports away again. Cherry greets her, and she welcomes Cherry back before running off again after noticing Abra reappear on a mans head not far away. Another man then runs down the street, declaring that there is trouble. After catching his breath he explains that he and his Mr. Mime were fishing by a lake, when a giant Gengar appeared. Mr. Mime tried to use Psywave, but the attack bounced right back. The giant Gengar then picked Mr. Mime up with it's tongue and ate it before retreating. Brock doesn't see how a Gengar would have been able to grow that big, so Ash & Co. decide to go and check it out.
Inside their new machine, Jessie looks down into a room to check on their newly nabbed Mr. Mime. She and James raise a toast to their mechanical ghost, when Meowth appears telling them that they don't have a reason to celebrate yet. He tells them that the town is full of Psychic Pokémon, and that they shouldn't celebrate until they have stolen every last one of them. They agree, and proceed to make their way to the town.
Back in town, Cherry is about to lead Ash & Co. to the lake where the Gengar was sighted, when Girafarig grabs onto her top, stopping her. She asks it what's wrong.
Out in the woods, the woman is still chasing her Abra when they both spot the giant Gengar. Abra Teleports back to her, and she orders it to use Psychic. The attack is deflected back. Seeing it knocked out from it's own attack, Team Rocket use the mechanical Gengar's tongue to grab the Abra. The woman tries to stop it, but she is unable to.
Back in town, Cherry is trying to understand Girafarig. She asks if something bad is coming, which it confirms. The then hear screaming as the mechanical Gengar comes down the street. The woman with the Abra runs up to them and tells Cherry to take her Girafarig and run. Taking charge, Cherry tells the woman to get everyone to take their Pokémon inside and hide, saying that her Girafarig should be able to defeat a Gengar no matter how big it is. She orders Girafarig to use Psybeam, but it gets deflected back. As they are wondering how it could do that, Team Rocket appear reciting their motto. Gloating, they reveal that the reason Psychic attacks won't work is because their Gengar has mirrors for eyes. Meowth comments that they are getting pretty clever with their plans, which Brock has to agree with, much to Misty's annoyance. Cherry becomes angry, and Ash & Co. notice both she and Girafarig glowing. She orders it to use Confusion, but the reflected attack knocks it back. It tries again with Psybeam, but that gets reflected as well. As the reflected attack gets closer to Girafarig, both Cherry and Ash jump in the way, dazing them slightly but blocking the attack. Ash tells her to leave Team Rocket to him, but she orders Girafarig to use Future Sight. The Trio look on, confused when nothing happens. Ash orders Pikachu to attack. Suddenly something shoots through Cherry's mind as Girafarig psychically communicates an idea to her and shows her a brief glimpse of the next few minutes. She tells Ash that Team Rocket are about to use the Gengar’s tongue, so he tells Pikachu to jump. They try again, but it jumps away again and stays floating in the air as Girafarig levitates it using Confusion. Pikachu happily floats out of the way of every attack. When Team Rocket try one last time, Pikachu is too far away and the tongue doesn't reach. Ash orders it to use Thunder, shocking the machine and freeing the captured Psychic Pokémon. As they are about to send their Pokémon out to battle, Future Sight hits, sending the Trio blasting off again. After the battle, Cherry reveals to Ash & Co. that she and Girafarig communicated psychically. They congratulate her.
As Ash & Co. continue on their journey, Brock notes that the next time they see Cherry may be at the Johto League Championships. Ash says that she will be strong, but that he and his Pokémon will be ready. And watching them as they go, Cherry tells Girafarig that they will be a great team, just like Ash & Co. are.
