This episode is essential viewing because:
James's Magikarp evolves into Gyarados.

James's Gyarados escapes.

This episode begins on the surface, where we see a big ship where the SS Anne sank. Officer Jenny and a bunch of other people are on board. Jenny says that they have found out that 5 people, Ash, Brock, Misty and Jessie and James, didn't make it out of the ship. She throws some flowers into the water, and they do a salute.

The flowers sink down to where the SS Anne sunk, right on the edge of a trench. Inside, we see Ash, who wakes up. He thinks the others are upside-down, even though he is. He falls. He looks outside the window to see they're underwater.

Then, weirdly, we see Jessie and James in bathing suits on a beach! They say their lines, then they say stuff about the white sand, the burning sun.

They wake up from their dream to find themselves right beneath the stoves, flames shooting down at them! Their hair sets on fire, and they put it out with some water that was coming from a broken pipe. Meowth explains that the ship sunk. Jessie calls Ekans and has it use Acid to make a hole in the floor. Before Meowth can tell her to stop, the Acid burns a hole in the floor. Water gushes in through it!

Ash, Brock, Misty and Pikachu are trying to fugure out which way is out. Since the ship is upside-down, down would lead to the deck, but everything below them is filled with water. Brock says if they dive down and come to a dead end, they'd be done for! Misty sends her Goldeen to search for a way out. If it finds a way off the ship, it is to return.

Goldeen find a drowning Team Rocket. It somehow brings them back. Of course, Team Rocket and Ash and Brock want to battle, so Team Rocket sends their two Pokemon, Ash sends Charmander, Squirtle, and Bulbasaur, and Brock sends Geodude. Then the ship starts tilting. Everyoner slides to one side of the hallway. They have their Pokemon go to the other side, but then they all slide that way. Misty has them call back all their Pokemon and the ship straightens out.

They have a temporary truce with Team Rocket. They shake hands. When Pikachu shakes Meowths paw, he shocks him. Misty gets mad at him.

Misty says how she once built a model of the SS Anne and knows about its structure. She says they have to go up, to the hull of the ship, and cut a hole through it. Brock sends Onix to make a staircase to the next floor.

They're walking through a dark hallway. Ash sends Charmander to light the way. They have to go to the engine room, where the hull is the thinnest, but the next room is in flames. Ash has Pikachu give his brain a jump start with a shock. Ash sends Bulbasaur and has it use Vine Whip to extend its vines to the other side. Ash, Brock, Misty and Pikachu cross over, but James is too scared. Jessie slaps him. Jessie: I'll always remember what a great dresser you were! James: So will I! Ash calls for them to come over. Bulbasaur has brought its vines back, but sends them back for Team Rocket.

Ash has Charmander weld a hole through the hull. Misty tells everyone to grab a water Pokemon and swim to the surface. The hull is burned through and Ash brings back Charmander before the water can put out his tail flame. Ash grabs on to Squirtle, Brock gets Goldeen and Misty gets Starmie. They swim out through the hole, leaving a water Pokemon-less Team Rocket!

James starts laughing. Meowth says he must be cracking up. But no, he has Magikarp! They tie themselve to the fish and James tells it to swim them to the surface. But Magikarp cant swim! The ship sinks, leaving Team Rocket to an unknown fate.

Ash, Brock, Misty and Pikachu are on a large piece of floating wood. Brock said that Noah sent a bird to find dry land and to bring back a branch if it found any. It flies away and sees Team Rocket, still attached to a flopping Magikarp! It somehow brings them back to Ash.

They think Team Rocket is dead and starts pushing them into the water for a traditional burial at sea. When they wake up Ash, Brock, Misty scream zombies!

That night, everyone goes to sleep, with Magikarp still flopping around.

The next day, everyone is very hungry. They start thinking about eating the Magikarp. Meowth tries biting it, but Magikarp is nothing but scales and bone. James get angry. It can't swim and it's not even good to eat! He kicks it and says he doesnt want to be its master.

It falls into the water and then it evolves. It turns into the ferocious Gyarados, and it is angry! James says he is its master, but apparently it has different ideas. Misty attaches Goldeen, Staryu and Starmie to the raft and they swim for their lives, with Gyarados chasing them. It stops suddenly, and so do they. Maybe it's tired? Misty has heard stories about Gyarados and their ultimate power Dragon Rage. Suddenly a bunch of Gyarados appear around the first one. They starts spinning around in the water to use Dragon Rage. It creates a huge water cyclone.

Misty says that no one has ever escaped Dragon Rage. They all get sucked into the cyclone. Ash, Brock, Misty and Pikachu are trying to hold onto each other, but are pulled apart.
