This episode is essential viewing because: The gang meets Morty.

Ash, Misty and Brock arrive at the top of hill and look down at the view. Ash gets excited, realizing that they have all finally reached Ecruteak City. Brock points out a big tower on the horizon. They think that it's the gym and they decide to head for it. As they are walking through the town they bump into a Fire-Breather. He starts trying to sell them an item finder, but Ash and Misty just walk away. Brock asks if it will help him find girls. Misty comes back and drags him off by his ear, saying that the person is a clown and not a magician.

Meanwhile, Team Rocket are nearby looking pretty gloomy. Jesse complains that they followed the twerps all the way to Ecruteak City and then they lose them! James points out that it's obvious that they'll find the twerps at the Ecruteak Gym. Meowth starts whining that he's hungry and Jesse agrees. They give some money to James and ask him to go and buy some food. James goes off and bumps into the Fire-Breather who's trying to sell an item-finder. James seems to think that it's a brilliant idea and buys it. He returns to Jesse and Meowth and they nearly kill him in anger of what he has just fell for. James is convinced that it'll work and he sets off trying it. He finds something and straight away starts digging. He finds a rare bottle top which delights him.

Ash arrives at the tower that they saw and enters it, followed closely by Misty and Brock. They enter and notice that the place is very old and has been in a fire a very long time ago. A shadow flies past them and then the building sets on fire again! They all run away but end up getting lost. Wherever they go the fire suddenly appears there as well. They fall down some stairs and get surrounded by the fire. Ash and Misty send out Totodile and Staryu and tell them both to use Water Gun. The water hits the fire but doesn't do anything! Totodile goes nearer and uses Water Gun again, but it still doesn't do anything! Totodile then goes nearer and walks into the fire. Ash cries out but is surprised when he sees Totodile dancing happily in the fire. Brock realizes that the fire isn't even warm, and that it is just an illusion. Ash sends out Noctowl and tells it to use Foresight. As Noctowl does it the fire is replaced by lots of Gastly's! Noctowl uses Tackle and scares off the Gastly's. Ash thinks he's beaten them but they all return again with two Haunter's and a Gengar! As Ash gets ready for a battle a voice tells them to stop. Ash looks up and sees a trainer at the top of the stairs. The trainer introduces himself as Morty- The Ecruteak City Gym Leader. Morty explains that the building is called the Burned Tower, and that it is home to lots of Ghost Pokemon. He takes them for a tour. Ash looks up and sees a picture of a bird on the wall that looks strangly familiar..... Ash asks Morty about it and Morty explains that it is a Ho-oh - a legendary Pokemon that used to live in the tower before the fire. Ash says that he saw a Ho-oh but Morty shakes his head and says that Ho-oh haven't been seen for three centuries. He explains that the other tower in Ecruteak called the Tin Tower was built as a replica of the Burned Tower, to see if Ho-oh would return, but so far nothing had happened.

Suddenly Togepi jumps out of Misty's arms and walks through a hole in the wall! Misty cries out and Pikachu follows Togepi. Morty tells the others to follow him and he leads them to an old room. He calls the Ghost Pokemon and tells them to find Pikachu and Togepi.

Meanwhile outside James is still trying to find treasure. Suddenly Pikachu and Togepi appear from out of a hole. Pikachu charges up but stop when it sees that Team Rocket have got Togepi. Gengar sees this and goes back to tell Morty. They run outside and Gengar uses it's tongue to trip team rocket up. Ash runs up but Meowth scratchs him in the face. Team Rocket decide to run away this time. Gengar zooms after them and Jesse and James send out Arbok and Wheezing. Gengar teleports past them and frees Pikachu and Togepi. Then Gengar uses Shadow Ball on Team Rocket and sends them 'Blasting Off Again!' Morty says to Ash that he'll battle him now but tomorrow would be a better time when everyone has had some rest. Ash realizes that Gengar will probably be one of Morty's Pokemon and works out that the next day will be one of his toughest yet.
