This episode is essential viewing because: Ash and Misty decide to compete in the Whirlpool Cup.

We join Ash, Misty and Brock travelling on a ferry back into Johto. Ash is still boasting about getting the Storm Badge and Misty is yet again dreaming about being a Water Pokemon Master.

Suddenly the ferry that they are travelling on goes near a whirlpool. When they all look around they see lots of them. They all start to panic but two attendants of the ship(who you'd think Ash would reckonize) tell them that everything will be alright, and offer them a drink. The gang look over the side of the ferry, and see it passing through easily.

Meanwhile Meowth appears and starts talking to the two attendants: Jesse and James. They take a net out and try to swipe Pikachu, but miss when the ship rocks: resulting with Ash getting the net over his head. They realize that it is Team Rocket. Team Rocket then goes through the motto and send out Wheezing and Arbok. Pikachu uses Thundershock but Wobbuffet uses Counter and sends it right back! The big blast knocks Team Rocket, and Ash, Misty, Brock and Pikachu into the water! Ash and co. are all fine....... until they notice themselves being pulled towards one of the whirlpools! Misty sends out Poliwhirl and Goldeen and Ash sends out Totodile. They start to get away but then realize that they are fighting a losing battle. Just as they are about to get dragged under, they stop! They see a shadow and hear a weird sound. Could it be a legendary Pokemon? Then a Corsola appears! The Corsola circles around them. Then a Tentacruel helps them back onto a boat. The Corsola hops towards someone on board. It's Professor Elm!

Professor Elm and Ash have a long talk to each other about what's been happening. Misty sees the Corsola again, and starts to admire it. Then the captain comes to talk to them and gets to know them. Professor Elm tells them about the nearby Whirlpool Cup Tourament which begins soon. Ash and Misty both decide to give it a go. They decide to visit the nearest Pokemon Centre at the Blue Point Isle for more details. As this is happening, Team Rocket get washed up at the shore and begin to descuss their next plan...............

Meanwhile Ash is at the Pokemon Center and is looking at a guide book for the Whirl Cup. Professor Elm then shows then a map of how the Whirl Cup works. It's similar to the Orange Islands, with there being four islands to visit, with thefinal tournament being held at Red Rock Island. As luck would have it the first island- Yellow Rock Island, is nearby. Professor Elm offers then a lift on his boat.

The gang set off on Professor Elm's boat. During the journey, they see a Meowth balloon heading towards the Pokemon Center. It's Team Rocket again! They hover above the Pokemon Center and release a net, trapping all of the Pokemon in the outside pool! Ash sends Pikachu after them but Misty tells him to stop and sends out Staryu. Staryu goes towars Team Rocket, but Jesse sends out Arbok. Staryu uses Swift but Arbok uses Poison Sting and poisons Staryu. Misty recalls it and is about to send out another Pokemon when Psyduck comes out. He jumps into the water and realizes that he can't swim. Misty recalls him and gives up. Ash jumps in and sends out Pikachu. Pikachu attempts a Thunderbolt but James throws a net at Pikachu and catches him! Professor Elm's Corsola suddenly jumps into the water and starts to use a Tackle attack, but James ends out Wheezing and tells it to use Sludge. Corsola somehow dodges it and tackles Arbok back to the balloon. Corsola then uses a Spike Cannon, cutting the net and the balloon, sending Team Rocket 'Blasting Off Again!' Misty decides that she really wants a Corsola now, as Ash, Brock, Professor Elm and her sail off into the sunset.
