Ash, Misty and Brock are travelling by cable car to the next town. They arrive and realise that they are at the wrong place. Ash realises that the ferry won't leave for another three days at looks out at a lake gloomily. Suddenly, they see a Pokemon swimming onto the shore. It's a Chinchou. Misty decides that she really wants a Chinchou, but she really, really wants a Corsola. Misty throws a Pokeball at it but it just bounces off. Then they hear a voice saying 'Don't catch that Chinchou. It's mine!', and they see a boy running towards them. Ash tries to stop the Chinchou from running away, and grabs the Chinchou. Chinchou uses Spark and shocks Ash. The boy introduces himselfas Datan, and tells his Chinchou off.

They all head into town where there is a festival going on, and go to the Pokemon Center. Ash speaks to Professor Oak, who tells them that the island was created when an underwater mountain came up, it's crater trapping the water. A lot of Chinchou live in town, and every year at the time of the festival, they go in a procession to the ocean, where they breed and then return. Someone always goes with the Chinchou on their journey, and it is considered an honor to do it. This year, this task has fallen to Datan and his Dad. Datan's Dad says that Ash, Misty and Brock are welcome to come along to. They go to a pier and Datan's Dad blows a whistle. Suddenly, several glows come from under the water, and lots of Chinchou come swimming to the shore! They get in a line and set off! They proceed through the town, and everyone throws water over the Chinchou, to give them lots of energy. They walk on and come across a rope bridge. They are half-way across when Team rocket appear at the other side. They say their motto, and then say that they are goinf to capture all the Chinchou. Meowth presses a button and............ nothing happens? Ash tells all the Chinchou to run back. Just before they get there, Team Rocket's trap works. A missile lauches up a releases a net, covering the whole bridge, just as the last Chinchou escapes. The missile falls downwards, taking the bridge with it! Ash has Pikachu use Thundershock and sends Team Rocket, 'Blasting Off Again!'. The gang decide that they should both take a different way to the ocean. Misty, Brock and Datan's Dad go one way with some Chinchou, and Ash, Datan and the rest of the Chinchou go the other way.

A long time later, all of the Chinchou with Ash and Datan are getting tired. Datan realises that the Chinchou need more water to get more energy, but there's no water around. So Ash sends out Totodile, and asks him to 'water' the Chinchou. Totodile thinks it's an attack and begins to aim directly, but Ash stops him just in time. Totodile uses a sort of Rain Dance. All the Chinchou get very lively, and they all continue on.

During the night, they come across a mountain pass. Datan steps on a loose rock, and tumbles down hurting himself. Just to react with how he is thinking, it starts to rain. Ash calls out to Datan and vice versa, but they can't find each other. The Chinchou all light up their antenna's, and start to sense Datan. They lead Ash to Datan, and everyone continues on safely.

The next morning, they arrive safely at the beach. Misty, Brock and Datan's Dad are already waiting for them. The two groups of Chinchou are pleased to see each other, and start to run towards each other. Just as they reach each other, they all fall into a hole! When the clouds of sand settle, everybody sees Team Rocket flying upwards with the Chinchou all in a net. James sends out Wheezing and makes him use Smokescreen. Pikachu tries some Thunderbolts, but they don't hit anything. Datan yells to thechinchou, telling them to make their antennas glow, so that they know where they are. They all make a bright light through the smoke. Ash sends out Totodile and Bayleef. Totodile uses Water Gun to make a hole through the smoke, and Bayleef uses Razor Leaf to cut the cage. Only the Razor Leaf just bounces off the cage. Datan's Dad tells Datan to make the Chinchou use Thunder Wave. Datan tells the Chinchou, and they all use Thunder Wave. The cage suddenly brakes, and all the Chinchou fall into the ocean. Pikachu uses a Thunderbolt, followed by a Spark from the Chinchou, sending Team Rocket 'Blasting Off Again' for the second time this episode.

Datan's Chinchou swims back to him, and they both agree that they'll always be friends. Datan realises that his Chinchou won't be gone for good and will return. He tells it that he'll always be at the town waiting for it to come. Suddenly a wave sweeps over Chinchou, sending him off into the ocean.

Meanwhile Team Rocket are lying in the ocean, waiting for someone to come and rescue them. They see a glow of light coming there way, and think that it's someone coming to save them. But it's the Chinchou, and they can't resist giving one last shock.

The gang catch the ferry to the next town. Just as the ferry sets off, Misty stops waving to Datan and his Dad, glances near the pier. It's a Corsola! Ash and Brock have to hold Misty back to stop her diving in the get it. And so they all sail off into the sunset.
