This episode is
essential viewing because: Brock is given a Vulpix by his fellow Breeder, Suzy. |
Still in Celadon City, Ash, Misty, Brock and Pikachu are in a place called Scissor Street. It's full of beauty salons for Pokémon. Brock wanted to come here. Misty says it also known as Breeders Lane. Brock wants to become a breeder, someone who raises the best Pokémon.
They pass a large poster of an Ekans and Koffing dressed up in some ridiculous outfits. It's an advertisement for a new store, Salon Rockét. Outside the store, we hear James' voice over an intercom. Inside, we see him and Jessie putting make-up and jewelry on a Raichu and Dodrio. They look, uh, weird. They give the two Pokémon back to a lady, who thinks they're adorable. The Pokémon arent too thrilled, though. Meowth tells Jessie and James to stop spending so much money on commercials.
Misty wants to get in line, but suddenly Brock says it's there! He runs over to another store. There is a picture of a Vulpix on the door. He seems reluctant to open it. Ash opens it for him and they all go inside. They see a lady massaging a Chansey. She says it will have more energy. Someone comes in, and the lady gives the Chansey back to him. They call the lady Suzy.
She sees Ash and asks if he needs help. He says they're just browsing. Misty spots one of the most adorable Pokémon ever sleeping on a chair: Vulpix!
Misty says she wants to hug it, but Suzy says not to. Misty picks up Vulpix anyway. Vulpix breathes fire, torching Misty's head. Vulpix jumps back on the chair, yawns and goes to sleep. Misty falls down. Suzy says Vulpix doesn't like to be petted or held by strangers. She sees Brock. Brock panics. He says, shouting, that it's nice to meet her. Brock: "I want to breed like you! No, I mean, I want to be a breeder like you!" He stutters a lot. He asks to be accepted as her pupil! Ash, Misty and Pikachu gasp. Suzy says she doesn't have any pupils. Brock gets upset.
Ash asks what makes her such a great breeder, which makes Brock really angry. He pulls out a microphone and spotlights go over Suzy. Brock explains that Suzy won the Pokémon Breeder Award 3 years in a row! And she was voted the most popular Pokémon breeder 4 years in a row! And her wildly popular websites recieves over 10 000 hits a day! Misty asks whether Vulpix has won any awards. Brock says that Vulpix is the hottest supermodel in the Pokémon world! Vulpix yawns.
We see them sitting at a table, drinking something. Pikachu is eating some of Brock's special food. Suzy says Pikachu looks great, it has a nice shiny coat. She asks Brock if he made the food, and he says yes. Vulpix walks over to the food and sniffs. Pikachu offers it a piece, and it eats it. Vulpix likes it! Suzy is surprised, Vulpix never eats anything but the food she makes herself. Brock tries to bow, htting his head on the table. He says he isn't worthy.
Misty says they saw some people with super fancy Pokémon as they were coming here. Was this the latest trend? Ash says it looks tacky. Suzy says people are trying to make their Pokémon flashy, when they should be trying to bring out their inner strength and personality. Misty says Pokémon must like to show off sometimes, too. She imagines Pikachu in a pink dress. Ash says Pikachu is perfect the way it is. He and Misty argue about whether the outside or the inside is important. Suzy asks if they should stop them and Brock replies it would be like trying to stop the tides.
Ash says maybe Misty should take Psyduck and she thinks it's a great idea. She brings it out. She tells Ash it'll probably be cuter than Pikachu and she leaves, with Psyduck waddling behind.
Suzy wonders if it's the inside or outside that counts. She's starting to wonder about her methods. Brock yells that she should stand up for what she believes in. If these people prefer style over substance, they'll give them substance with style!
A lecture on Pokémon care! A lot of people have come. Suzy says if your Pokémon is injured, you should give it a theraputic massage. She is massaging Pikachu and it looks very happy.
Misty is standing in line with Psyduck when suddenly everyone leaves! That weird guy/girl tells her that Suzy is having a lecture on Pokémon care. Misty says she doesn't care.
Suzy says she'll now have Ash and Pikachu demonstrate the techniques they've learned. She explains that a Pikachu's electric sacks are in its cheeks and can become very tense after a battle. Pikachu lies on its back and Ash rubs it cheeks. Pikachu really likes it. Suzy says that good communication between a trainer and their Pokémon is essential. The people who had their Pokémon dressed up look about as upset as the Pokémon.
We see Jessie and James painting roses on a Squirtle's shell. The Squirtle doesn't seem too happy. They ask for the next customer, but they only see one: Misty and Psyduck. They grab Misty and she says it's not for her, but for Psyduck! They dress her up in some weird clothes and put her hair up weird, too. Misty loves it: She thinks it's cute. Misty says she wants more. Jessie and James paint weird designs on her face. Meowth gets angry, saying this girl hangs out with Ash. It's then that Misty realizes it's Team Rocket! Misty says she'll never tell them anything. James grabs her and says if she doesn't, they'll paint her face like Frankenstein! Misty doesn't like the sound of that. But where is Psyduck?
We see Psyduck running towards Suzy's store. It runs inside, yelling in panic. Pikachu understands and tells Ash that Misty is in trouble. They run over to Salon Rockét and see Misty tied up. Ash and Brock asks what happened to her face and pretend to gag. They say to let her go, but Jessie says they're conducting important beauty research. Suzy says that real beauty is on the inside. Jessie and James say it's the outside that counts.
Meowth says how the whole thing was a scam, while the costumers outside listen. They would come up with some stupid fashion and when someone brought in a rare Pokémon they'd swipe it!
Jessie says they'll trade Pikachu for Misty. Ash and Brock say they'll battle! James says they have a special fashion battle platform. He presses a button on some sort of control. There are explosions as this weird platform rises up. We then see Jessie and James, with James wearing a dress and blonde wig and carrying a parasol. Jessie is wearing a soldier's uniform of some sort. They say a weird version of their lines. They send Ekans and Koffing, who are also dressed up. Ash sends Pikachu, and Brock sends Geodude.
Geodude uses Seismic Toss on Ekans. It rolls and hits Pikachu. Pikachu uses Thundershock. Koffing uses Sludge, blinding it and Geodude. When Ekans and Koffing try to go forward, they trip on their outfits. They lunge for Pikachu and Geodude, but Vulpix jumps in front of them. They stop.
Suzy says they'll give them a lesson in breeding. They worry so much about their Pokémon's looks that they don't have any strength. She tells Vulpix to use its ultimate attack, Fire Spin!
A red aura surrounds Vulpix. Its eyes glow blue, then red. It breathes a huge jet of flame, which swirls into a giant tornado of fire. It hits Team Rocket, and keeps going. Misty panics. Team Rocket is blown away. Brock says a cute exterior can hide inner strength. Misty, who got fried, yells at Psyduck to untie her. Psyduck just looks at her, stupidly.
Suzy says that she still believes in what she's doing. She was impressed with Brock, but she says that she is still a student, not a teacher. She says she will leave to become a trainer, too, or something like that. They're rivals from now on. Vulpix nuzzles Brock. Suzy asks for Brock to take care of it. He's the only other person Vulpix has ever liked. He could probably take care of it better. Brock gets out a Pokeball and Vulpix goes inside. Ash laughs at Misty's face.
We see Team Rocket running from a mob of angry costumers.
