In the middle of Petalburg Woods, May and Max start to fight about which way to go. Brock interferes and tells them it will only take longer to reach Rustboro City if they keep fighting like this. Then a rustling is heard in the trees and a group of Treecko jump out of the trees. May recognizes it from professor Birch's lab and Ash wants to catch it so he throws a pokeball at it but it doesn't work. May then wonders why Ash did this while he adviced her to weaken it first before throwing a pokeball. Ash though doesn't give up and runs after the Treecko and Brock and co also decide to follow Ash as well.
Ash runs and then slips and falls down the hill. He bumps into a tree and when he looks up he notices the tree is big but it doesn't have any leaves. Then a Treecko shoots a twig out of its mouth right at Ash but he does manage to avoid it. Ash challenges it but Treecko just fires another one at Pikachu now who also avoids the twig. Pikachu gets angry and it starts to fight the Treecko.
Team Rocket who spy on Ash, are impressed by Treecko's battle qualities. So as usual they plan to capture Treecko!
In the meanwhile, all Treecko's accept Ash's challenge but the leader of the Treecko stops them and they start to argue. Ash has no clue what so ever what they are talking about. Team Rocket also listens to the story and Meowth translates it for them, it seems like the leader Treecko wants to protect the tree from wither since it has nearly died once before but it's still standing there. And the Treecko doesn't want the tree to wither. Team Rocket feel sorry for the Treecko but they don't give up on their plan and still want to steal the Treecko's. As soon as the conversation between the Treecko's end, Ash wants to battle the Treecko but they run off instead. Ash tries to call for the Treecko but it seems to have no effect but Ash doesn't give up.
As Brock and co eat lunch, May and Max are starting to become worried about Ash. Brock comforts them since he knows Ash and Pikachu longer, he knows everything will be fine. They continue their lunch and stay on the spot so they won't have the risk of missing Ash and Pikachu.
As Ash watches the sunset from high up in the tree he decides to send out Taillow to search for the Treecko and for May, Brock and Max. Then Ash notices Treecko, who carries a leaf with water, which he uses to water the roots of the tree. Ash decides to help Treecko but instead he becomes angry since he expected to have a battle but Ash explains why he's doing this. They then hear some loud rumbling and they notice Team Rocket in a bulldozer who destroy all the trees in their way and catch every Treecko in a net. Except the Treecko next to Ash, they try to stop Team Rocket but it doesn't work. In their balloon, Team Rocket flies off as Pikachu tries to shock them with his thunderbolt but it has no effect since Team Rocket has lights that absorb Pikachu's electricity.
Ash tries to send out Taillow when he realises that Taillow is flying around in search of Treecko and May and co. Team Rocket then grabs Pikachu in their net and Treecko becomes angry and tries to shoot his twig at the balloon but i't isn't strong enough. James sends Cacnea out into the battle and Ash checks his pokedex. Cacnea uses its pin missile at Treecko, but it misses. Treecko then gets an idea and climbs up in the tree and jumps high in the air and hits Jessie with a tail whip attack before she could do a thing. Jessie touches a button which releases all the Treecko, who get Pikachu out of the net as the Treecko tries to distract them. Then Treecko jumps on the balloon and Cacnea becomes angry and fires its pin missile at Treecko but hits the balloon instead and once again Team Rocket blasts off once again.
The old treecko thanks the rebellious Treecko and they shake tails. Then the tree starts to split and all the Treecko jump aside to keep the tree together. Ash grabs a rope to help them as a Treecko gives Ash a vision of how this happens. Ash sees how a seed once grew quickly out to a tree and it kepts spreading seeds which grew up into trees and soon this forest was made. Ash now understand but then the tree falls apart.
Ash thanks the Treecko for his help but instead Treecko tackles ash and Pikachu. Ash thinks Treecko is mad with him but as Treecko stands in a fighting position he realises Treeck is challenging him to a battle. Ash gladly accepts the challenge. Brock and co arrive along with Taillow and they see that Ash is in the middle of a battle with Treecko. Pikachu tries to shock Treecko but it keeps avoiding the shocks but eventually it hits but it doesn't have much effect. Max comments that Ash still has a chance to win since Pikachu is faster but Ash questions that since Treecko just avoided a quick attack and a tackle. Pikachu then releases a thunder attack which hits Treecko and causes it to faint much to Max's surprise. Pikachu nearly gets hit too but it's standing on its tail causing the electricity to go into the ground. Ash quickly throws a pokeball at Treecko and manages to capture Treecko.
Ash does his usual pose and lets Treecko out to make sure it's okay. Treecko is happy to join Ash's team and Treecko says goodbye to the other Treecko. The elder Treecko then gives Ash's Treecko a seed as a goodbye gift. Treecko plants the seed in the ground and along with Ash and co, Treecko leaves the group and together they head for Rustboro City.
