When arriving at the house, they are greeted by a boy named Kinji and May and Max explain to Brock that this one of their father's best students. However, Brock happened to meet him and get acquainted with him back when he was on his way from Pewter City to meet up with Ash and friends in Hoenn, so he knows him too. Max and May ask Kinji if their dad is around but quickly and suspiciously he tells them he had to do something important. In a whisper tone, he tells them he'll explain everything soon, which leaves the group confused. Then all of a sudden they are greeted by their mother and May and Max hug their mother. When they ask about their father, Caroline is frozen and Kinji interrupts and asks them to tell some adventures. Quickly Caroline invites them in for lunch.

Ash in the meanwhile has entered the pokemon center and is suprised to see Norman in a deep conversation with nurse Joy. Ash quickly runs up to Norman and tells Norman he wants to prove himself in a gymbattle to show him his strength. He gladly tells Norman about his four badges and the pokemon he captured and Norman is impressed and agrees to have a three on three gymbattle with him. Joy comments that Norman is a fantastic gymleader and mumbles something about his looks which makes Norman emberassed. Joy takes Ash's pokemon and Ash becomes slight suspicious.

Meanwhile, Team Rocket are thinking of a new plan to become popular since the last one didn't work, so after some planning they decide to do the old hide underground and snag the pokemon trick.

As Max and May are eating and happily talk about their journey and adventures with Team Rocket who are less powerful then Team Magma and Aqua. May scolds Max for making an impression of bragging about an evil organization, and Max apologizes. They then start to tell about Ash who has gotten 4 badges and wants to challenge their dad now which makes Caroline stop cooking. Kinji once again interrupts and asks them to tell more about their adventures and pokemon. May mentions that her best Pokemon now is Beautifly and Caroline becomes even angrier at the mention of Beautifly! Kinji then jumps in front of their mother and tries to hide her reaction as Max brags about how Beautifly won in a contest. Caroline is now nearly losing her temper, but Kinji can't let them see that, so he tries to console her and calm her down and not be that sensitive. So with a slight tone of sadness in her voice she acts to be happy for them as they wonder why Caroline is angry about Beautifly.

After lunch, Kinji takes May and co to a building with lots of trees inside where he explains the entire situation and is about to warn them as Max jumps in and sees Vigoroth and hugs it. May then wonders if he supports Vigoroth or his father more. Kinji wants to explain some more but they then notice Slakoth hanging in the tree. May checks out the pokedex and it appears to be Norman's as well. Kinji becomes desperate but then Max points out to Slaking who's resting as May scans it with her pokedex. Now Kinji wants to get to the point and tells them about rumors spreading around about their dad and that he might be in love with nurse Joy. May and Max are shocked as Brock seems to be jealous. Kinji explains that he's never openly admitted it, but he hasn't been to the house in a long time, and has been acting suspicious and that once he overheard some flirting between the two of them. Max and May are nearly too shocked to ask anything, but Max is still wondering about the Beautifly thing. Kinji explains that after their marriage, their most memorable romantic moment was in a field of flowers and Beautifly, so whenever they think of Beautifly, they think of their romance. But with this going on, it doesn't shock them that she doesn't want to hear a word about Beautifly. Then Ash drops by!

Team Rocket is nearby as they notice Ash and co and they plan to steal Pikachu. But then Meowth suggets to steal Slakoth, Vigoroth and Slaking since they would make good presents for the boss. Team Rocket love that idea and decide to go through with it.

In the meanwhile, Ash tells the others about how he met Norman and that he seems to be fine and that he talked with nurse Joy about something. For the others it all seems to connect and they ask Ash if he picked up something odd, which involves romance. He comments that he saw them blushing. They quickly thank him as they quickly explain the situation to him. Then Brock says he is the "master of love" and runs off to Nurse Joy, followed by May and co, except Ash who is a bit confused. When he is about to run up to them, Vigoroth falls on top of him. Ash and Pikachu recognize it from their last battle with Norman, so they greet each other once again. Vigoroth happens to remember them too.

Then May and co arrive at the center and they see Norman in a deep conversation with Nurse Joy. They greet Norman and pretend to know nothing at all so he asks them about their journey. But they're too shocked to talk, but Brock is still a bit blind to what's happening and is a little jealous of Norman. Norman also knows Brock from when he visited that time, but instead Brock quickly goes off to flirt with nurse Joy, which angers Kinji and he pulls him away.

Team Rocket in the meanwhile arrive at a door, which they suspect is the door that leads to the gym. When they enter the room, they notice a machine and they go off into another direction. Ash is nearby and he meets Norman's two other pokemon Slakoth and Slaking. He introduces himself and Pikachu to Slakoth, but Slaking is still sleeping.

Back at the Center, Brock has finally lost is marbles and tells Norman about how Caroline is worried sick at home about him and that Nurse Joy should be with him instead of Norman. Kinji becomes angry and pulls Brock away as May is stunned at Brock's comments. Then an angry Caroline stands in the doorway and tells him what she knows. Everyone is surprised to see her, especially Norman. When she asks for an explanation, he says he's just visiting, and they all fall over. They keep trying to squeeze it out of him, but he openly denies it and stays silent, even when Kinji asks him. He'd never lie to Kinji.

In the woods, Team Rocket see Ash and Pikachu sitting with the Slakoth family and jump out at a perfect opportunity. They say their motto and attack Ash with Seviper and Cacnea.

Back at the Center, there's a big affair brawl going on. Norman feels bad about what he's done, and says he loves Caroline with all his heart, but its hard for Caroline to forgive him. The kids are of course on the side that they should unite as a family once again. As the argument continues, Max breaks out into tears, and goes on about how he misses living with them as a family, and he loves them both deeply, and that his father is like a hero to him, and he doesn't know what he'd do if they were apart. Caroline is actually really touched by Max's words, as is Norman. Now it looks like he's given them something to think about, since they both deeply love their children

Back with Ash, Seviper attacks Pikachu with Poison Tail, while Cacnea attacks the three sloths with Pin Missile. While they all run with Ash, Seviper fires another Poison Tail, breaking the door to that place down and knocking them all out. Suddenly, to his luck, Norman, Joy, Caroline, Kinji, and the kids come to the rescue! Norman is the only one that can control them, and he looks especially angry they attack with Poison Tail and Pin Missile, destroying that machine! With rage, Norman yells in a booming voice for Slaking to wake up. It may be heavy sleeping, but it can hear him. Slaking then charges at them angrily, and fires a Focus Punch, blasting them to oblivion.

However, Norman is still angry that his fireworks machine has been destroyed. That's a real disappointment to everyone else as well, but Joy happens to have the potential to fix it. Norman gladly thanks Joy, but Caroline looks a bit jealously paranoid again, until Brock comes and starts flirting with Joy, only to be dragged away by Max. When Joy finishes fixing it, they set off fireworks; and realize a few seconds later that the fireworks are shaped like Beautifly! Joy also feels bad about what she did, so she had these Beautifly fireworks all planned so they can celebrate the reunion of Norman and Caroline! Everyone cheers as they hug once again, happily ever after. While Norman goes in to get some more drinks, Caroline tells them about their wedding and their honeymoon, and the symbolism of Beautifly to them. Then he comes back, thanks Ash for saving his Pokemon, and tells him that he has convinced him he is a worthy trainer, and he can have the battle tomorrow. Max, however, still insists that Ash doesn't stand a chance, but Ash is motivated as usual. May seems to have mixed feelings about who will win, and who to root for, well, that will all be determined tomorrow!
