With only a few months until the Grand Festival and the Hoenn League, Ash and co are on their way to Pacifidlog Town so May can earn her last contest ribbon. While having a rest at a beach they see Drew, training his Masquerain for the Grand festival. They go over to him and find out that he has already earned five ribbons, enough to enter the Festival. To see who is better, May challenges Drew to a pokemon battle.

The battle begins, May and Beautifly VS Drew and Masquerain. May goes first with a Silver Wind from Beautifly, Masquerain spins through it then attacks with its own Silver Wind witch Beautifly dodges. The battle is cut short by Team Rocket in their Magicarp sub, witch then uses a vacuum to suck up the pokemon. Unfortunately it also sucks up the twerps who land on top of Team Rocket. Wobbuffet pops out of its pokeball and causes Max to stumble and hit a button that sends the sub back into the water at high speed and then blow up sending everyone flying off and landing on an island.

Team Rocket wake up on the island, but Wobbuffet is nowhere in sight causing Jessie to start worrying where it could have gone to.

Ash, Brock, Max and Pikachu are also on the island but without May and Drew with them. They go off to see if they can find them.

May and Drew are on another part of the island complaining about being stuck with each other when an old man in a boat spots them and rushes over to help. They tell him how they go to the island and he tells them the name of it, Mirage Island, and also tells them that it is surrounded by fog and whirlpools. Drew has already heard of the island and says that it is world famous for being the only place where Liechi berries grow. The old man (named Rodrick) then offers to help them find their friends and also to show them the pokemon that live on the island.

Ash, Brock, Max and Pikachu are searching for May and Drew but Brocks compass wont work, Swellow comes back from looking but has not seen them. They decide that finding a river and walking along it could help as May and Drew might do the same. Ash and Brock send out Corphish and Mudkip to help find a river and after a few seconds they point them in the right direction.

May, Drew and Rodrick are looking for Ash, Brock, Max and Pikachu. Rodrick asks if their friends would know what to do if they were lost, May says that Brock would know so they also start looking for a river.

Team rocket are frantically searching for Wobbuffet when they hear a sound then a pokemon runs past them. Thinking its Wobbuffet they start to run after it.

May, Drew and Rodrick have found the river, Drew asks how Rodrick how he knows so much about the island. He explains that he was once a pokemon co-ordinator searching for Liechi berries to make the perfect pokeblock, while he was going to Mirage island a whirlpool sucked him in and tossed him onto the island. When he woke up he was in a cave on the island full of Liechi berries. Drew then spots some Liechi berries and Rushes over to them, then the cliff starts to fall away with him and May stood on it. Rodrick sends out a Bellsprout to save them with vine whip but they end up falling in the water anyway. Rodrick runs along the bank and tells them to swim ashore as there is a waterfall ahead. They fall over the waterfall but it knocks Drew unconscious. Suddenly alot of pokemon are running along the bank, they jump into the air and form a chain to save May and Drew.

Ash, Brock, Max and Pikachu arrive at the river and start calling out for May and Drew but get no response. Suddenly Rodrick calls to them from on a cliff. Once hes down he tells them what happened. They all continue searching.

In a cave on the island May is trying to wake Drew up. When he comes to she explains that a bunch of pokemon saved them, Drew identifies them as Wynaut, May then brings out Dextett to find out more about them. Then a Wynaut brings them a Liechi berry each, they try them and find out that when first tasted they are sweet, but leave a very bitter aftertaste.

Out on the island and Team Rocket have stopped looking for Wobbuffet and are laying on the ground. Suddenly Wobbuffet appears from behind a tree eating Liechi berries, angry that Wobbuffet has been eating they yell at it to tell them where it found the berries which it does, so they run off to get some.

As Ash and co walk along they find some footprints belonging to May, Drew and the Wynaut, they decide to follow them on the hope that they can find May and Drew.

Back in the cave and the Wynaut are having a little party. One hops over to May and Drew to ask if they will join in, May lets her pokemon out and they go and play while Drew just sits on a rock and watches.

Out on the island and Team Rocket have found the Liechi berries, they decide to try some but find that they are not what they expected. Meowth then explains that they may not taste nice but people will pay a lot of money for them. They start to hatch a plan.

In the cave May and her pokemon are still playing with the Wynaut. Suddenly they hear a loud sound from outside, they run out and find Team Rocket stealing Liechi berries with another vacuum which sucks May up aswell. She tell Drew to do something to stop Team Rocket. Drew runs after them but comes to a cliff, the Wynaut form another chain that drew slides down. Team Rocket have not tied May up in a tree but Drew comes to help.

Ash and co have arrived at the cave but find it empty, they then notice that all the Liechi berries have gone. They then go in search of Team Rocket to see if they had anything to do with it.

Back with Team Rocket and a battle has started. Seviper is sent out to use Poison Tail so Drew sends out Roselia to use Magical Leaf which Seviper bats away, a Wynaut then jumps in and uses Counter against Seviper. Roselia then uses Petal Dance to cut May out of the tree. Seviper is then ordered to use Poison Tail but a bolt of electricity puts an end to that. Ash and co are then reunited with May and Drew. Jessie then sends out Dustox ordering it to use Poison Sting and James sends Cacnea out. Dustoxs Poison Sting is then countered by Masquerains Silver Wind. Cacnea is then ordered to use Pin Missile and Meowth then uses some sort of gun to supercharge the attack, the Wynaut then jump onto eachother and use Safeguard to stop the attack. Ash then orders Pikachu to use Thunder which causes Team Rockets balloon to drop the container of Liechi berries. Beautifly and Masquerain then use Silver Wind to send Team Rocket blasting off again. As they are flying away they see sunrise over Mirage Island. Everyone on the ground start rejoicing at the defeat of Team Rocket.

As Ash and co are sailing away from the Island in Rodricks boat they start talking about the next contest in Pacifidlog Town, this reminds Rodrick and he hands May a basket of Liechi berries to help in future contests. As the episode ends May is stood at the front of the boat looking as determined as ever.
