After catching up with Pikachu, Ash & Co come across a ghost town. May gets scared, thinking that its called a ghost town because ghosts live there. But Max explains that the reason its called a ghost town is because no one lives there anymore. This puts May at ease.
Walking down the main road, they come across the entrance to an abandoned mine. Brock thinks that it would be a good place to stay until the storm passes over but May thinks something could be hiding inside. Slowly, they notice a purple light coming from inside. As it gets closer the see that its a ghost. They run away, scared.
Somewhere in the town, Team Rocket hear some screaming. They then see Ash & Co running around in the town. They look where they came from and what scared them. They decide to go and see what scared them so much.
Looking in the mine, Team Rocket are trying to find what scared the twerps off. They then see the purple light and start wondering what it is. The Ghost becomes visible and they all say that they know what it is. A Ghost. They turn to the Ghost, finally realising how scary it is and scream so much that they faint.
Back in town, Ash & Co are hiding in a building when they hear the scream. Max asks Ash to go and look what it is. Reluctantly, he does. He creeps over to a window and looks out into the town seeing nothing important. He then notices that it has started to rain. Brock says that since it is raining they can't go anywhere and will have to spend the night there. Max and May are still scared and don't want to stay there but Ash says that they will be all right because they are there together.
Back in the entrance of the mine Jessie has woken up. She then wakes James, Meowth and Wobbuffet up and tells them that they have to go. Then they all notice the rain and James says that they will have to wait it out with the 'goblins'. Jessie becomes hysterical and tells them that it is a scientific fact that ghosts and goblins do not exist and that what they saw was a hallucination brought on by lack of food and them being tired. They start dancing now that they know that there was no ghost. But they hear a sound and the Ghost reappears, scaring them and making Wobbuffet rush away. Jessie sends out Seviper and James sends out Cacnea to attack the Ghost. James orders a Pin Missile but it goes straight through it. Jessie orders a Poison Tail and that goes straight through the Ghost as well. Then, as a last resort, Jessie throws Meowth at it but he goes right though as well. Luckily he hits something and the lights in the mine turn on sending the Ghost away, much to their relief. They then notice a group of Ghost Pokémon hiding in a corner and realise that they were responsible for the ghostly illusion. Meowth threatens them with Fury Swipes. The Ghosts start talking.
Back in town, everyone is asleep apart from May who is still scared. She starts to hear a sound and realises that it is music and its coming from somewhere in the same building as them. She tries to wake Ash up but he just starts talking in his sleep. She then shouts at him and wakes everyone else up. Max asks what is wrong but then they all notice the music. They go to see where it is coming from.
Looking for the source of the music, Ash & Co come across a room full of Psychic Pokémon dancing. And there, just inside the room is the source of the sound, an old record player. May wants to see inside the room but ends up pushing everyone over and making all the Psychic Pokémon run away, apart from an Abra still asleep inside a protective bubble.
Inside the room the Abra is still asleep. May wonders if it is feeling all right. Ash touches the bubble but it sends off some sort of energy, hurting his hand. Brock says that Abra is using Safeguard to filter out any loud noises. May starts wondering why all the Psychic Pokémon are there in the first place. Max sees something under the couch the Abra is on and pulls it out. Its a photograph of a group of people and the Pokémon that ran away when they entered the room. Brock says that he now understands what is going on. The people in the picture are miners and the Psychic Pokémon where there to move big boulders out of the way with their psychic powers. Ash wonders what happened to all of the people. Suddenly a light starts shining from Abra. Ash wonders what is happening and Brock tells him that Abra could be having a dream, and they are seeing it.
In the dream the residents of the town seem to be leaving. A man explains to the Psychic Pokémon that they are unable to take them along, but tells them to take care. As the truck is leaving, an Abra starts to chase after it but a little boy tells it that it can't go with them and it has to go back. The Abra falls over and the truck disappears from sight. The Abra starts crying as the dream ends.
Brock says that the Pokémon must have gotten lonesome when the towns people left. May thinks that the reason they were dancing was to cheer themselves up. They decide to throw a huge party to cheer all the Pokémon up.
With the table set and some bowls full of Brock's Pokémon food everything is ready for the party. Everyone calls to the Psychic Pokémon to come out but to no avail. Max puts the music on and all the Pokémon rush through the door and start dancing and eating. May says that they look a lot happier and Ash says that he didn't think it would work.
Back at the mine Meowth is explaining to Jessie and James what the Ghost Pokémon told him. According to the Ghosts, before all the people and Psychic Pokémon came along and made the town, the place was the Ghost Pokémon's home. When all the people left they thought that they could have some peace and quiet but the Psychic Pokémon kept playing their music. That was when the Ghost Pokémon decided to make a huge ghostly illusion to scare the Psychic Pokémon, and anyone else, away. Now the Psychic Pokémon and the Ghost Pokémon are mad at each other.
Jessie has a plan. Since the Ghost Pokémon don't like the Psychic Pokémon, and Team Rocket could use the Psychic Pokémon, then the ghosts may help them to catch the Psychic Pokémon just to get some peace. Meowth turns to the Ghost Pokémon and tells them to leave everything to them. They will sort out their Psychic Pokémon problem.
Still running, Wobbuffet comes across a Kirlia dancing inside a building and instantly falls in love. It walks into the building and goes over to Kirlia. Ash & Co notice it and start wondering if its Team Rocket's Wobbuffet. Wobbuffet then holds out a flower to Kirlia. Kirlia jumps off of the table and takes the flower and says something to Wobbuffet which seems to make it very happy. May says that it is very romantic.
The ground starts to shake making all the Pokémon fall over. Wobbuffet hangs on to Kirlia to protect it. Everyone runs outside to see what is happening and see the ghost illusion again, but this time it is a lot bigger. Its hands shoot out and it grab some of the Psychic Pokémon, seemingly eating them. It then flicks Wobbuffet out of the way and takes Kirlia and Pikachu, but Wobbuffet jumps after Kirlia. Something starts happening to the giant ghost. It seems that voices are coming out of it. It then sends out quite a lot of smoke. Once the smoke has cleared it reveals a giant robot shaped like a ghost. On the top are the Ghost Pokémon. Brock says that the giant ghost must have been an illusion created by the Ghost Pokémon.
Team Rocket emerge from inside the ghost robot reciting their motto. Once they have finished, Wobbuffet jumps out of the robots hand and down to the cage holding all the Pokémon. Ash starts shouting at Team Rocket, telling them to give all of the Pokémon back. They say that they wont as they want to give Pikachu to the Boss. May asks why the Ghost Pokémon would want to be on the same side as Team Rocket. Team Rocket start crying, telling them that all the Ghosts want is some peace and quiet but all the Psychic Pokémon want is to party all day and night so they told them that they would help them out. Ash says that its still no reason to treat Psychic Pokémon like dirt. They then notice Wobbuffet hammering on the bars of the cage holding the Pokémon. Team Rocket tell it to stop but it doesn't listen. It walks back and then runs into the cage, breaking the bars and letting the Pokémon out. This seems to impress Kirlia.
As the Pokémon are running towards Ash & Co, Team Rocket tell the Ghosts to go after them. They do so and launch a group Shadow Ball attack. As it is about to hit Pikachu, Kirlia jumps in the way and uses Reflect sending the attack back. The attack hits Team Rocket's robot, destroying it and sending them blasting off again. This upsets Kirlia as Wobbuffet flies off as well leaving only the flower it gave to her.
The Ghost Pokémon and the Psychic Pokémon all seem ready to fight. Brock says that if they start it could turn nasty. Ash tells them to calm down but they don't listen and charge at each other. He then orders Pikachu to use Thunderbolt which stops both sides from moving. Max asks them why they can't all get along and they all start shouting. Brock then notices that even though there is all this fighting, Abra is taking no notice. May says that it can't hear a thing though its Safeguard. This gives Brock an idea.
In the morning all the Psychic Pokémon are dancing to their music again. But this time they are inside a huge Safeguard bubble so no sound is getting out. Abra has some headphones on so it can't hear a thing.
Outside the bubble May is saying what a good idea it was and Brock says that the Ghost Pokémon seem to like it. Max asks them if they can all live together happily and the Ghosts nod an affirmative.
The episode ends with Ash & Co looking at the dancing Psychic Pokémon and knowing that they have helped settle a dispute by making an arrangement that both groups of Pokémon can be happy with.
