This episode is essential viewing because: Ash meets Bruno of the Elite Four, who catches a Giant Onix.

There are now only three weeks until the Pokémon League Tournaments. Ash and Brock are watchng TV at Ashs house. On the TV, Bruno of the Elite Four sends out a Hitmonchan. Ash says that Bruno is the master of Fighting Pokémon! But then Misty turns the TV off, saying theyre couch potatoes. Brock says something about learning Brunos Pokémon training secrets. Ash says that he wants to meet Bruno, and his mom says she knows where he is! She says that she heard a rumour that he went to Mt. Hideaway to keep his Pokémon secret a secret. So, they go to the mountain.

After a long time of hiking, Misty says she sees their destination about 7 or 8 miles away. Brock and Ash says that Misty must be tired, so theyll stop to rest. =) They go to a house, and Ash and Brock whine that theyre tired and hungry. and old lady comes out, carrying a platter. Ash and Brock ask if she knows where Brunos secret training place is. She says maybe. And she says something about their being some theives around stealing her muskrat meatballs. O_o Why would you want to? She looks down to see the ones of the platter gone! But it was just Ash and Brock, who are chowing down on them now. Misty asks how they can eat that stuff?

Just then, some sticks and stuff on strings start rattling. The lady says its them! They all run over with the lady, whos holding a broom. They see two familiar looking people, and one Pokémon, running away carrying sacks. The lady shouts at them to stop, and Ash says its Team Rocket! They stop, and say their motto, which Meowth fast forwards through. =) Ash says they dont fool him, what trouble are they up to now? Jessie says theyre going back to the basics. James says since theyre always losing, theyre trying to get some Poké-enlightenment, and have become hermits. Jessie says they didnt even bring money for food. James says so theyve decided to live off the land, by stealing the ladys food. She gets mad, and hits them with the broom, knocking the bags out of their hands. They run away. The lady asks if theyre going up the mountain, because giant Onix live there! Theyre famous for them. Brock says fertile soil must make them grow larger. Misty says they must be scary! The lady assures them theyre gentle.

So, they hike up the mountain. Ash spots what looks like a road, so they go to investigate. Brock says it must be a trail left by something big! Something starts rumbling. They see a HUGE Onix coming down the trail, straight for them! They all run. Brock says he wishes he could study what makes them so big. Misty says he can if they survive! A guy comes from behind a rock, and says to come with him! They run behind the rock, and the Onix slides past. The guy asks if they;re okay. They look to see its Bruno!

Bruno walks back to his camp, with Ash and the others following. He asks why theyre following him. Brock says that Ash is trying to become a Pokémon trainer, but isnt too smart, and doesnt always think before he does something, and that he wants Brunos help! Ash asks for Brunos help. Bruno asks if theyre willing to do whatever he asks. They say yes.

Later, Ash and Brock are carrying water from a stream in buckets, while Misty watches. She asks what it has to do with Pokémon training. They say a lot! Brock says it helps build strength, and Ash says it helps with balance. Then he trips, splashing water all over Misty. Next, Bruno has them chop wood. when Ash tries, one piece hits Misty in the face. Then, Bruno has them carry stones up a hill. But, Ash loses hit balance, and begins hopping around after Misty, who runs, saying to keep away. =)

Then, Bruno asks Ash to peel the bark off a twig. Brock asks what does this teach? Bruno says it teaches a very important lesson, as he cooks some stew over a fire. Ash gives Bruno the twig. Bruno says that if you ever go camping, never forget to bring a fork! Everyone gets upset, and Bruno starts eating the stew with chopsticks he made by breaking the twig. Misty says this guy seems pretty phony. Brock yells at them for doubting Bruno. He picks up a stick, and says that Bruno is so highly trained, hell sense his attack, and block it! Brock jumps at Bruno, and hits Bruno over the head! Bruno faints. =)

Later, when he wakes up, Brock asks about Brunos Pokémon secret. Bruno says there is no secret! He only came to the mountain to catch the giant Onix. Its no secret that you need strong Pokémon to be a strong trainer! Brock says his image of Bruno has shattered, and he cries. Team Rocket watches from a ledge. They have plans to capture that giant Onix, too!

As they walk along the huge trail, Meowth says theyd have to catch something that big by surprise! Jessie and James pull out a bazooka, and say they have something Onixpected! Meowth says that joke was Onixceptable. =) they go to a huge hole at the end of the trail and wait. There is a lot of shaking, and the ground splits open. The giant Onix burst out! They all scream, and Meowth says to forget about the Onix! Jessie says theyre going to catch it!

Back with Ash and co. Ash is upset that theres no secret about Pokémon training. Brock says thats probably what he tells all the Pokémon trainers who ask. Misty says not to bet on it. Suddenly, explosions are heard! Jessie and James fire at the Onix, hitting it! But that just makes it mad, and it chases them. They all run into a cave, but Onix starts trying to dig to them, and rocks start falling on them in the cave. Ash and others see whats happening from the rim of the crater. Ash says they have to help!

Misty sends Staryu, and Brock sends Onix, which is half the size of the big one. (You know, Snorlax cant be the heaviest Pokémon, because that big Onix must weigh a couple tons!) Brocks Onix tries to Tackle the big one, but it doesnt even dent it. Staryu and Squirtle uses their Water Guns on it, and it pauses long enough for Team rocket to escape. But then Onix knocks all the Pokémon out, and hits Team rocket with its tail, sending them flying.

Brock says hes never seen an Onix that powerful! Then, the Onix spots them! It rams the cliff, and Ash falls. Pikachu tries shocking Onix, but of course, it has no effect. The Onix lunges for them, but then Bruno jumps down, and carries Ash and Pikachu back to the top of the cliff. Bruno says to recall their Pokémon, hell handle the Onix. They do, and Brock asks what Pokémon Bruno will use. He says he will use no Pokémon, and jumps down into the crater.

He asks the Onix why it is attacking him, and the Onix attacks, and Bruno jumps out of the way. This continues for a while, until Bruno jumps on hte Onixs face. It tries to hit Bruno with its tail, but Bruno jumps away, and Onix hits itself on the face! The Onix calms down, and Bruno says it doesnt need to fear him, and to tell him what is troubling it. Bruno puts his hands together and concentrates. He goesover, and puts his hands on some of the boulders that make up the Onixs body. He finds a large crack between two of the boulders. He says whats this? and reaches into the crack. He tells the Pnix it will opnly hurt a moment, then he pulls something out.

Its a Sandslash! Bruno says this is what was troubling Onix! He sets the Sandslash down, and it runs away. Bruno says the Pnix will be fine, and asks if it wants to come with him. It nods, and Bruno puts it in a Poké Ball. Brock is amazed that Bruno could feel what was hurting the Onix. He again asks about the secret, and Bruno says there is none. Ash says they can keep it a secret. Bruno says hell only tell them if they dont keep it a secret. He says the secret is this. Humans and Pokémon must work and live together, and care for each other. Bruno says he looks forward to the day he and Ash will battle. Ash syas so does he, and Bruno leaves. Misty says he was the real deal. Brock says there really was a secret. Ash laughs for no apparent reason.

Meanwhile, Team rocket has landed in a very bad spot, like they always do. In a crater full of Onixes! Jessie says things are loking rocky. James says these Pokémon couldnt be boulder. Meowth says maybe its because people take them for granite! Team Rocket: Masters of Bad Puns. =)
