This episode is essential viewing because: Ash's Krabby evolves into Kingler. Ash progresses to the 2nd round of the Kanto League.

We see Prof. Oaks lab. Inside, he, Mrs, Ketchum, and lots of other people are there, watching a TV. A reporter on the TV says theyre going to show live coverage of the competition. Mrs. Ketchum sees Ash and co. walks by the camera. They go to a place to get checked in. A lady at a desk says welcome to Pokémon Village, and asks Ash for his identification to be checked in. Brock says Ash can be checked in, but he wants to check out her beautfiul smile. Misty pushes Brock away and says its time for him to check out. =) The lady asks Ash if this is his first time at Pokémon League, and he says yeah. She puts his Pokédex in a computer then gives it back, saying hes checked in.

Ash asks her who hes battling first at the Indigo Stadium. Brock comes back and says that Ash wont fight at the Indigo Stadium first! First, he has to win battles on four different fighting fields: rock, ice, grass, and water. Ash asks how he knows this, and Brock says he studied the Pokémon Trainers Handbook, or something like that. He asks the lady if thats right, and Misty pushes him away again. Ash asks the lady where hell be fighting first. She says to push a button, and whichever symbol the light lands on is where hell fight first. It lands on Water. And his opponent will be a guy named Mandi, and will be the third match.

Jessie, James and Meowth are dressed as reporters. James points the camera at a guy, and aks if hes a Pokémon trainer. He says yeah, and she says to tell the viewers about his rare and valuable Pokémon! He says he has a Dodrio, a Raticate, and a Venomoth. Jessie says great, a three headed bird, an overgrown rat, and bug-zilla. =) They walk away, and James wonders if anyone has some good Pokémon they can steal. Meowth says that maybe that guy surrounded by a bunch of people does!

Its Mandi! Hes doing magic tricks with Poké Balls, (making them dissapear, turn into Pidgeys, etc) James says he likes his style. Meowth says he likes those Pidgey. They go over, and Mandi makes a rose appear, and says its for Jessie. She asks if he;s a Pokémon Trainer. Mandi says they must not be a very good network if they dont know who he is, the Astounding Mandi! He asks what network they work for. They says theyre from the LCN, the Lovely Charming Network! Mandi says hell only appear on networks that have viewers, and walks off. Jessie says to come back so she can make his teeth dissapear! James and Meowth warn her not to blow their cover! James says not to act like some radio show host, and she says hes right, and it would be a crime for her face to appear on radio. Meowth says she scares him. =)

Ash and the others are walking down a street. Misty asks Ash if he wants to use some of her Water Pokémon. Ash says no, he has Squirtle. Misty says he needs more than one, there has to be variety. They pass by Gary and his cheerleaders. Ash asks where Gary is fighting, and he says the Ice field. He says sarcastically that he hopes Ash wins, hed feel terrible if he didnt! Ash asks why, and Gary says he wants to beat him himself! He leaves to go to his first battle. Ash says hell show him!

A voice comes over some speakers, saying for Ash Ketchum to go to the nearest phone for a special call. He does, and its Prof. Oak! Ash asks if something is wrong. Oak asks if Ash wants to swap some of his Pokémon for the battle. He says Gary just traded two of his. Krabby gets in front of the screen, and Ash says Krabby would be perfect, and asks Prof. Oak to send it. Mrs. Ketchum comes over to the phone, and asks Ash if hes been eating alright. She says Prof. Oak invited her and the other people to watch the competitions. Everyone in the neighborhood is rooting for Ash! Prof. Oak transports Krabby to Ash. Mrs. Ketchum reminds Ash to brush his teeth, go to sleep early, and wear clean you-know-what! She says good luck.

Ash and the others go outside, and Ash says that with Krabby and Squirtle the battle will be easy. Mandi says that he means it will be easy for him! Ash holds out his hand and says its nice to meet him. But Mandi says his hands are for Poké Balls, not people. Misty says it wouldnt hurt to shake hands before the match! Mandi spins a Poké Ball on his finger, and says Ash will be no match for him, and leaves. Misty says sarcastically that hes charming. Brock says he doesnt know what hes talking about. Ash says he just talked himself into a tough match!

Later, theyre eating at a restaurant. Misty wanrs Ash that using Keabby might not be good, because its never battled. He should use Pokémon with more experience! Misty says theyre just trying to help. Brock says shes right. Every trainer can use three Pokémon. The battles are usually decided before the battles even begin, because the trainer has to choose the right Pokémon to battle with. Ash says theyre right, but hell win. On a TV on the wall, a reporter says theyre at the Ice field, where Gary Oak has just one his firsrt victory! She asks how he feels, and he says that winning the first battle is important. In every battle, there are winners and losers, and all the trainers he knows are losers!

On the Water field, two people are fighting. One guy is down to only a Tentacruel, and the other has a Seaking. The Tentacruel fires water at the Seaking, but it dodges, and knocks out Tentacruel with Horn Drill! Ash and the others are inside near the entrance to the Water field. Ash is next. Misty says hes shaking, and he says its just the stadium shaking! Brock says he could go for chocolate shake. Misty says just go. The doors open, and Ash asks Pikachu if hes ready. Pikachu nods.

They go out to the field, Ash on the Green platform, Mandi on the red. Jessie, James and Meowht see Mandi. The announcer says that Mandi is a favorite in the Pokémon League, and known for his exciting battles. Now its time for the battle to begin! Mandi says that hell show Ash some magic, and Ash syas he has some trick up his sleeve, and he not just some twerp. Then, Jessies voice comes over the loudspeakers. She, James adn Meowth are cheering for Ash and telling him to beat Mandi! But then a bunch of Officer Jennys drag Team Rocket away! Jessie says she wants her lawyer, and James syas he wants his mommy! =)

Ash says theyre never change. Misty says neither will Brock, who is staring after the Jennys. He says those were his favorite Jennys. Misty says he can tell them apart?! He says of course! The Viridian City Jenny wears her skirt shorter than the others, and the Celedon City one uses styling gel in her hair, the Saffron City Jenny wear exotic Vileplume Number 9 perfume, but before he can get to the Vermilion City one, Misty drags him away.

The announcer says to excuse the interuption. The battle continues. Mandi sends Exeggcutor! Ash sends Krabby! Misty says not to use it! Ash says he still has Squirtle and Pikachu for backup. She says hes making a mistake. Exeggcutor uses Psywave! Ash tells Krabby to dive underwater and use Harden. It does, dodging the attack. Mandi says they have it now! Exeggcutors eyes glow green and Krabby is spun around in a huge whirlpool! Misty says she knew it. Brock says its using some sort of Psychic attack! Exeggcutor uses Egg Bomb! Ash tries recalling Krabby, but the water is blocking him!

Krabby manages to get out of the whirlpool! Ash tells it to use Vice Grip! It jumps up, and grabs onto Exeggcutors leaves, preventing it from attacking! Krabby uses Leer, then Stomp! Exeggcutor is knocked out! Ash wins! Misty says she cant believe it! Then, Krabby start glowing, and evolves into Kingler! (It sounds like its saying cookie!) Mandi says that Ash has had some beginners luck, but now its run out! He sends Seadra! Ashs Pokédex says that Seadra have violent temperments, and the quills on their bodies can render an opponent unconcious.

Seadra uses Agility! Kingler uses Water Gun, but misses! It tries Bubble, but still cant hit Seadra! Mandi says its too slow! But then, Seadra gets hit by the bubbles, and is sent flying into the air! Kingler uses Crab Hammer, knocking Seadra into the water! Ash wins again! He has one more to go. Misty says Ash isnt nervous anymore. Brock says that the crowd is cheering for him! Jessie says that he isnt doing bad. James says that his Kingler came through in a pinch.

Mandi looks pretty upset now. He says that he can and will win! He sends Golbat! Ash tells Kingler to dive under water. Brock says to call it back, its weak to flying attacks! He should use Pikachu! Ash says he wont. Mandi has Golbat use Take Down. It flies over the water. Ash tells Kingler to use Vice Grip, and it jumps from the water and grabs Golbat! But it flies out of its grip and goes behind it! It uses Razor Wind, sending Kingler flying back! Golbat dives down to finish it with Mega Drain! But Ash tells Kingler to use Hyper Beam! (Since when does it know that?!)

A ball of energy forms in Kinglers big claw, and fires at Golbat! Golbat falls, knocked out! Ash wins!!! He jumps up and say he did it! Mandi falls to his knees and says how could he lose, hes Mandi the astounding! Brock and Misty say congradulations, and Ash runs over to Kingler. He says it was unbelievable! The crowd cheers, and at Oaks Lab, his mom says that he did it! Jessie is surprised that he did. Meowth says that the better Ashs Pokémon get, the better theyll be when they swipe them! Brock says that winning trainers should act with dignity and restraint. Well, thats the opposite of what Ash is doing, cheering and jumping around in front of the reporters and cameras, saying how hell win all the battles, etc. =)
