The episode begins with Jessie and James fixing the Magikarp submarine on a remote island. James is moaning about nothing ever going right for them. Jessie tells James to try positive thinking, they look over to Meowth, who might be taking the concept too far, over free clams, in fact. James looses his cool with Meowth and tries to make him use Pay Day. Meowth explains he can't because of all the effort he put into learning to talk. Jessie spots 'the twerps' on the horizon and she orders the Rockets to get them.
Ash, Misty and Tracy, meanwhile, are trying to find somewhere to stay for the night. There is nowhere in sight. Suddenly they see a reflection on the water coming towards them. When it surfaces they see it's the Magikarp sub, out of which, Jessie, James and Meowth climb. They recite the motto and then realise that they are sinking. Ash sends out Squirtle to blast off Jessie and James with Water Gun. Meowth thinks he has gotten away with it when he is left behind. Then he notices Squirtle behind him, who blasts him off too.
We cut to an island where the natives the natives are awaiting the arrival of the 'The Great Meowth of Bounty.' The prophesy foretold a he would arrive on a night like this one. Meowth lands on the beach and the natives put him on a bed and carry him to a throne underneath a giant, gold Meowth statue. There is a pile of fruit in front of him. The leaders are shocked when Meowth speaks to them, but reassure themselves that the Meowth of Bounty is a special creature. Meowth realizes there's been a mix up, but decides to keep quiet about it.
Next morning, Meowth is enjoyind the fruit but calls for some meatballs and, later, some entertainent. Later, while on his own, Meowth wishes for someone to share his hapiness with and he thinks about Jessie and James. He sees Ash, Misty and Tracy approaching the island on Lapras and imagines them wrecking everything. He runs to the natives and orders them to get the kids off the island. They agree.
The giant statue moves into action. It tries to stomp on our heroes, who run for their lives. It chases them to the edge of a cliff and they jump into the sea. Later, a new problem arises for Meowth. Jessie and James have been washed up on shore and are brought to Meowth. They ask him to get the giant statue to put them down. He acts as if he doesn't know them and orders for them to be thrown into the sea. Meowth is upset by it all, but does nothing.
Later, Jessie and James sneak back onto the island to spy on Meowth. James tells Jessie that Meowth might have found true hapiness. One of the leaders comes to Meowth and tells him that the time has come to perform the bounty ceremony, in which Meowth must use Pay Day to bring wealth and hapiness to the people. The giant Meowth picks him up and shakes him to make him perform Pay Day, which, of course, he can't. The leaders decide to let Meowth battle so that he gain experience to learn the attack.
At the Stadium he has a tough time battling a Nidoqueen. The natives then search the Stadium for coins but find none. Next they send out an Onix for Meowth to gain more experience. The Onix almost kills Meowth. As Jessie and James look on, they remember some of the good times they've had with Meowth and decide that they should help him. Meowth has just about given up hope, when coins start flying onto the pitch. It's Jessie and James throwing Nickels from inside the stadium tunnel. James throws out his bottle caps aswell. They leave Meowth to enjoy himself.
The next day the people thank Meowth for using Pay Day. The leaders ask Meowth if he would like stay and rule the people. Meowth looks at the pile of coins, notices James' favourite bottle cap and realizes what his friends did. Meowth runs to the beach to see if he can find them. They run off when he spots them and he chases after them. He is begging them to forgive him as the natives catch up with him and ask him to stay. Jessie and James appear and recite a special version of the motto:
JESSIE: I'm a friend who needs you, too.
JAMES: Make it double, we both need you!
JESSIE: To protect us both from desperation.
JAMES: To unite us all in jubilation.
JESSIE: You help us chase away our lonliness.
JAMES: You're a mess, but we love you, never the less.
JESSIE: Jessie!
JAMES: James!
JESSIE: Team Rocket's friendship never ends.
JAMES: So let's set sail on our ship of friends!
The battered Magikarp sub surfaces and Jessie and James tell Meowth thst they aren't mad at him. Meowth jumps aboard and they leave the island. Meanwhile, Ash and co. are still musing why the giant Meowth chased them off the island, as they sail on. The episode concludes with Jessie, James and Meowth fishing. They say that getting Meowth to battle may be the way to get him to learn Pay Day. Meowth's cry echoes through the night.
