Our heroes are still making their way across Mandarin Island, they now appear to be treking over a desert landscape. Misty and Ash say they can not walk much further. Ash says it's probably because they haven't been getting any exercise riding on Lapras all the time. A large storm cloud appears behind Tracy as he is talking and it begins to rain.
Ash, Misty and Tracy run for cover. Misty collapses on her knees and Ash has to help her to shelter under some rocks. They see some Magnemite absorbing the lightning bolts from the storm. Ash checks it with the Pokedex. Next a Jolteon appears and starts barking at them. A covered wagon rolls up and the cowboy bloke at the reins says, "Hop in, Pilgrims." They do so.
When the storm has passed the cowboy explains what he does for a living to Ash and friends: He runs a Magnemite ranch and when there are stoms the Magnemite absorb the lightning. He then takes them round towns and villages to 'power 'em up. He then explains that he calls all the Magnemite by numbers. Ash and Misty wonder how he can tell them all apart. Magnemite number six floats off and the cowboy orders Jolteon to round it up.
He offers to give the gang a ride to the next town and they gladly accept. He tells them they can call him Ethan. He lets Ash have a go at driving the wagon (which is pulled by Tauros). Ash has a little trouble keeping control. Next morning, Team Rocket spies over our heroes' camp. Jessie comes up with the plan of stealing the Magnemites' electricity and then selling it for a fee. Meanwhile, Ethan is on the videophone to Officer Jenny of the next town. She informs him that the last lightning storm brought the power lines and the whole town is running off the Poke Center's own Magnemite...they won't last much longer. The phone goes dead because they have run out.
Jolteon begins barking because the Magnemite have flown off. It turns out they have got stuck to a huge magnet fixed to the bottom of Team Rocket's balloon. James picks up Jolteon and Pikachu with the 'shock-proof nabber-grabber'. Ethan orders Jolteon to use a Pin Needle attack instead. It works and James drops the two Pokemon. Jessie sends out Arbok to stop Jolteon rounding up the Magnemite. It uses Tackle and knocks Jolton into Ethan, who falls over, hurting his arm.
Quickly, Ash gets Pikachu to use Thunder shock. It hits Team Rocket's balloon and they blast off, without the Magnemite. Soon, Jolteon is resting because it used a lot of energy. Misty warns Ethan he shouldn't drive the wagon because he has injured his arm. Ash decides to take the Pokemon himself. (Suddenly he has learnt how to ride a Tauros!) He saddles up a Tauros and sets off with nine Magnemite. Tracy, Misty and Ethan promise to follow in the wagon.
As Ash and Pikachu ride along, the Magnemite suddenly break up and all head off in different directions. Ash dismounts and gives chase. Pikachu thundershocks and they all move back. Ash counts and realises that number six has gone missing! When he finds it and grabs onto it, it pulls him away. It's Team Rocket again. They've aquired an electromagnetic machine that attracts Magnemite. Ash runs off with the Magnemite and sends it to Pikachu. TR use the machine and Pikachu uses it's Thundershock.
Magnemite is caught in the middle. All of the Magnemite come out of a sack Meowth is carrying and begin to glow. Some of them evolve into a Magneton, which Ash looks up on the Pokedex. The Magnemite Thundershock Pikachu to restore it's electricity. Team Rockets machine starts to smoke. Ash orders for Pikachu and Magnemite to tdo a Thunderbolt together and Team Rocket shout, "Team Rocket's blasting off twice, that's nice!" As dusk falls Ash and Pikachu arrive at the stricken town. "Let's do our job," says Ash. Misty Tracy and Ethan arrive to see the lights of the town twinkling brightly. "All thanks to Ash," murmurs Ethan. The next day, he thanks Ash for his help and so does Officer Jenny, as the episode concludes.
