I have for you not one release date, but three. These are also almost official, but not totally, but I do have news on when the official release date from Nintendo will be announced.1) April 8th. This was given to me by someone who deals with the people that design and manufacture the unofficial controllers; this is the date they were given so that they could work out how long they had to produce the controllers ready for release.
2) Early March. On January 28th, Nintendo of Europe will be giving an official press conference and will be giving out the release date of the GameCube. Sources say that the GameCube will be released one month after this date, but this does seem quite unrealistic, although I'm crossing my fingers.
3) March 6th. At the Nintendo Show EA fatefully put down the date of March 6th for the release of their "SSX Tricky" game, so everyone was running around like headless chickens shouting, "that must be the release date for the Cube". Nintendo asked EA to withdraw the release date, but it does tie in with the March 5th release quite well.
In other news, I went into GAME today to preorder my Cube, but as there was no confirmed release date I was only allowed to write my name down on a list rather than pay the deposit, which is fine, as I don't have 25 at the moment anyway. But I spoke to the Supervisor, and he said they had 18 names for the GameCube and only 3 for the Xbox. Least to say I was happy. Not that I don't like Microsoft or anything (evil grin)...
I'd also like to share this with you, which I got from my latest CUBE magazine:
"MICROSOFT SAID: The Xbox(tm) video game system from Microsoft Corp had the best-selling videogame console launch on record after two weeks of sales, according to The NPD Group Inc, the definitive source for sales and market data on the videogame industry.
THE TRUTH? The NPD Group's figures were obviously so convicing, that the Xbox team were too embarrassed to print them. Three days after the Microsoft Press Release, Nintendo claimed the 'best-selling videogame console launch' title, and provided actual figures as proof."
